| .... you seem to be saying that by refuting what they feel to be false beliefs, they are, in fact, admitting that belief. Maybe I'm missing something here, but that simply doesn't make any sense to me. The Sunni DO believe in the Mahdi, but in a way very different from the Shia. |
John,
If I am an atheist, I don't believe in God. Therefore, I cannot claim to believe in Jesus (the son of God) or Mohammed (the messenger of God) or any other part of any faith that involves believing in an element involving God because God does not exist to me to begin with.
Now if a Sunni person claims they believe in the Imaam Mahdi, they would have to believe in Mohammed having stated that Imaams will exist. But if a Sunni person does not believe in Imaams.. how can they claim to believe in the Imaam Mahdi, the last of them? Let alone, describe how he'll come into existance and his emergence?
That was my point. But what you pointed out was that some sunni DO believe in parts of what the prophet had to say about Imaams and in particular the Imaam Mahdi. What they don't believe about the Imaams includes that the Imaams are saints and those who should rule. They believed the caliphates should rule.
"wa Kulli shayin ahsaynahum bi Imaamin mubeen" - Surat Yaseen. "Everything is recounted by a known Imaam." Shia's point to many sayings in the Koran that hint to the existance of the Imaams. But hadith wasn't just used to prove that Imaams existed, even prayer wasn't explicitly made clear in the Koran. For example, praying the morning prayer of 2 riqaas is not written in the Koran. It's in a hadith that both sunni and shias do NOT dispute.
Anyway, this is a LOOOONG debate I've heard too many times. Just continue to read up on it if you want to know more about it. |
