We love Solzhenitsyn, the rascal!
But there are those, even on these boards, who disparage him as a mediocrity... |

Only read Gulag and more importantly Cancer Ward many years ago, possibly when you were an embryo. CW was one of the most powerful pieces I have read. |

And don't underestimate "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich."

This reminds me. I have 'Apricot Jam' sitting on my bookshelf. Been there for a few months already. Need to get stuck in. |

Just read some of the comments:
"Even two Will Selfs don't equate to one George Orwell."
"Will Self is a failed magician. A devoted pupil of the unspeakable he still failed to dominate his will and self sufficiently enough for anything other than spleen to emerge. Such is the way of the intellectual brush salesman."
"Seems to be a contest between the two Selves as to which one will nod off first."
"I'd like to read Will on the subject of what motivates people to read a news source whose general stance they don't agree with, click on a piece by or about someone in whom they have no interest and then write a comment as utterly pointless as 'I'm heartily sick of this man'."
"Which clown at Penguin thought this was a good idea?"
"I have never been so glad that my screen at work doesn't possess speakers."
"The one on the right needs a haircut."
That being said, I was transfixed by his fur. I wonder if he too uses L'Oréal Paris Elvive Full Restore 5 with Pro-Keratin. |

Really? you read all three volumes of The Gulag Archipelago? If so, congratulations. I'm only diving into it now and am pround of myself for making it past the first 80 or so pages of description on who was arrested under Stalin. I find that most people who claim to have read it have only read passages. |

Thanks for this, Fluffy. My bias has been confirmed. I'm not the only one who thinks Selfie-absorbed is total pants. |

Sparks, it was a long, long time ago when I had spare time and little to do in it. I confess I cannot remember much about it, come to think of it I can't remember a lot about Cancer Ward either - my most enduring memory of that is a patient holding a hot water bottle to his abdominal cancer because it relieved the pain.
But then I sometimes watch films, get halfway through and realise I have seen them before but continue watching because I can't remember how they end! |

Getting that way myself too. But usually happens midway through a post. I realise I've written it before. Many times. |

Try Deutscher's trilogy on Trotsky. Still great. |
