This is a good thread to revisit. Like Chris, I have also pretty much just got here, as it were. I won't go into an anti-US rant, but lets just say some things have been brought into relief for me. I will go back in 2-4 years to get an MA, but I am starting to feel like I may very well be an expat lifer.
My big question is what that MA will be. A MATESOL would probably be best, but it is kind of a weak fallback if I ever want/need to return to the states. On the other hand, getting certified to teach at the high school level internationally would set me up much better for the fallback, but would require probably four years back in states, to get the creds and experience. And of course, I am not very sure I want to teach the spoiled children of the international elite. |

Not necessarily. Coming from the New York City Department of Education (the City public schools), I learned much about American disorganization.
Before that, coming from China, which was incredibly disorganized and chaotic, I thought the US (NYC) would be much more organized. Well...
Actually, that's why I'm fond of my current situation in Japan. My school is incredibly transparent about things and they let me know well in advance what is going to happen and how it is going to happen. Very smooth...and very nice. Like I wrote, much better than my two previous TESOL stints in New York and in China.

I may eventually return to my home country to enroll in a doctorate program but upon completion of that, I would probably want to up and out right back to Asia--maybe back here to Japan. |
Well these days I can see a PhD in the long term plans but I think that I will try to earn it in Asia. I know that a PhD from the United States or Europe would be better but I don't plan to get a job in the United States anyways so I think that it is irrelevant.
But first I need to go back and do the Teach for American program or some other alternative certification program. |
