Too bad you never used your DELTA and MSc TESOL to get into program management. But no... You admit that you were simply too lazy!! So you're stuck in the lowly classroom.

Here's where you could be today:

Exciting career opportunities at Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College. We are one of the biggest centres of Further Education in the country and we currently operate across four sites and enrol over 25,000 students annually.

34,188 - 38,175 pa incl
(Ref: 49/06)

(depending on qualifications)

The 'English for Speakers of Other Languages' Division at our Ealing site is currently looking to recruit a Programme Manager who is qualified to RSA DipTEFL standard (or equivalent). You will be required to teach on a range of courses within the Division and also to help manage the ESOL/EFL programme and diversify the Division's income by generating and embedding new business with local employers and/or overseas clients...

I bought my desktop computer with printer nearly 6 years ago for about a thousand dollars. I get unlimited internet access for a pittance with doruk net.

Dearest "thrifty" --

Don't you remember the tutoring I gave you last year about using the quote function? You've reverted to your old ways. Please don't blame it on the drink.

Thrifty, have you ever thought about going into business for yourself? Two people I know have managed to start their own schools (admittedly not in Turkey), but others have thought up pretty good money making ideas and made them work.

For example, one guy I worked with struck a deal wih a landlord and rented some mingy apartments off him, he cleaned them up, put in some basic furniture, got the utilities hooked up and rented them out to foreigners at a higher rent. He now only teaches part time as this in his main income.

Or how about setting up somesort of English summer camp for kids? Your kids could participate too. Teaching children's English is an untapped market in Turkey, parent's are not investing in their kid's future at the time when language acquisition is easiest.

You speak Turkish, and have a Turkish spouse to assist, I'm sure if you put your mind to it and took a risk, you could find some outside project to supplement your income.

Also Thrifty, I am curious, why did you get a TESOL, DELTA and MSc in TESOL? Was it your plan to teach? When you were back in England sponging off your parents and going to school, what was your plan? The three qualifications suggest that you had somesort of ambition.

Your qualifications and claim to be lazy don't add up.

No, I had no desire to teach but I graduated in the recession-worst year for graduate employment ever. With a degree in linguistics I was unemployable so after a long stint of manual work I saved up enough for the CELTA and have looked back ever since. As I said I was into TEFL for a while and got more qualifications thinking that that TEFL was better elsewhere.

Starting a business with no capital or experience is not possible but if it is why do you not do it?

Hey Thrify, I think you should write an essay and submit it to the ESL Cafe. I'm not joking. Some people want to make a career of it and may benefit from your perspective. Usually we only get brief pieces of information from you. I'd like to know the whole story in 1,500 words or less.

I can sum up what thrifty will say in two words:

EFL sucks

I'm beginning to wonder if he's even a TEFL'er to begin with and not some bored high school student.

Think of all the time he could use looking for a job but he spends here ... that alone is a disgrace to his family - primarily wife and kids.

I plan to.

AND you have loads of experience, and speak Turkish. I'm not saying you have to quit TEFL today, but why don't you branch out a little? Look for an alternative/supplemental income?

I too, wonder if you are for real. It seems no one can have such a negative and defeatist attitude day in and day out and still get out of bed in the morning. I would love for Mrs. Thrifty to post here. She could tell us what were the qualities that made her love you enough to marry you.

There has to be more to you than this.

Yeah I could do it but I need to think of a title. I was advised on my master's that titles need to signify action.

Any ideas?

Would you share your business idea with me? I am serious I would be interested and if you have any ideas that do not involve private lessons, kids or bars let me know.

I got married ages ago.

Mrs Thrifty will not be posting here.

On another thread, Gordon wrote:
The best jobs ask for a masters or DELTA. If you are in this long term, then you want the best jobs, right? However, these courses can wait awhile.

I taught for 9 years with only a BA and Celta and did get some good jobs, so it is possible. But when I looked at it as a career, I knew I needed a masters, especially when you have a family to support.

And that just about says it all. The next step, of course, is to use the master's degree and promote yourself. The jobs will not find you. YOU must find the jobs.

Thrifty, why not try BAE/SDT in Saudi Arabia? They pay around 4000 a month tax-free plus a lot of other benefits. 5 years of that and surely you'd be a new, more positive man.

With your qualifications and experience you'd have a great chance getting accepted there.

My idea doesn't involve teaching, kids, or bars. I have had enough of all three.

I don't need a business partner, and if i did... well, you know.
