Can't help feeling that Mexican parties should do the same, but I can't see where she's going to come from:
Parades? Esther Elba? Vzquez Mota? - I don't think so!
Margarita Zavala de Caldern? - Now that could be interesting! |

The consensus in the media seems to be that she was picked by McCain to be his running mate in order lure disaffected Hillaryites to the Republican ticket. One thing not in her favor is that she's strongly against abortion rights, something I can't imagine that supporters of Hillary will go for. |

For Mikey and anyone else (well, you do have to be a US citizen) who wants to receive an absentee ballot for the upcoming US presidential election, check out this website:

Yes, because she's a woman O rude one. I doubt we'll see that in your wonderful Mexico anytime soon. The glass ceailing won't even have a crack in it for a LONG time. At least when it cones to a woman president. |

Wow, talk about the pot calling the kettle black, oh, really rude one! Or in psychological terms, it's called "projection", I believe. |

The fact that a woman is in power means nothing in and by itself to a feminist like me. I would never vote for a candidate on the basis that she is a woman. There are several examples of women in power that make me feel sick to my stomach, a few names come to mind: Margaret Thatcher, Madeleine Albright and Condoleeza Rice... and the list goes on. |

OK, I can agree with your point about the list, but Thatcher?? I thought everyone loved her!?
P.S. Sorry for the mean spirit. |

I think that was part of McCain's thinking in choosing Palin but not the only or even main one. McCain also needed to throw a bone to his base, hence a strong conservative. I think Palin will draw some Hillary voters to McCain's camp and look for more campaign ads touting this idea. However, I dont think in the end it will draw enough Hillary votes to make the election count.
That being said, I think Palin is a good choice. A VP pick should say something about the candidate. By choosing a woman, and someone who is not a "safe, logical choice"... McCain shows his independent "maverick" side in a good way - he is not afraid to make a risky decision. She also brings executive experience to the ticket.. something none of the males in this race have. However, that same experience is already being picked apart... Obama is calling her a small town mayor, ignoring that she is governor of Alaska and Daily Kos is looking for and playing up stuff from her days as mayor. I do not yet know if what they are saying about her record as mayor is true or not, but I find it odd that they lead their article today on her with it and not her record as governor.
One final advantage is that she is from Alaska... a state with vast oil reserves at a time of $4 a gallon gas prices.
Its not all about her being a woman... but its a nice plus. Lets see how she handles the big time.... |

How old are you and how much time did you spend in Britain in the 1970's and 80's, Milenka? |

Is this some sort of interrogation? |

Well yes, because, although you have the right to like and dislike any politician and his/her politics, I think someone who intelligently studied the transformation of Britain in this period under Thatcher, or lived through it (as I did), wouldnt make this kind of comment.
What exactly makes you "sick to your stomach" about Thatcher? Could it be that it has nothing to do with the great work she did? |

What's terribly sad on my part, besides the incredible history that M.Thatcher had, is that any time anyone mentions her name I think of the Ab Fab episode where 'mother' is doing a quiz in a magazine. She says aloud, 'How many years was Margaret Thatcher the prime minister of England?" She reads the choices, " Two years, ... Eleven years,....A thousand years." Then replies.." Well,... This is a trick question, isn't it!?!" And seems completely stumped by the question. |

Let's see, first off, you imply that something's not OK with my intellect because there's no way I could've INTELLIGENTLY studied the impact of this politician on her country (and the world) without agreeing with you or others who, to quote another poster, LOVE her. If that is your position, I really don't see the point in explaining why I included her as one of many examples of women who are in power and, in my view and based on my life experiences, studies, analyses, etc., do a poor job. Please don't make easy implications about me or my thoughts. Conceiving the possibility of others having different views on political issues would help lots more. |
