Teetotal and Golf doesn't seem a very logical match-up Wink

Don't Scots spell it whisky? (No pedantry here - serious question about the distinction.)

Dunno, I speak/write English, not Scots/Gaelic Very Happy

Dear Steinmann,

Indeed they do, but . . . . it ain't whiskey as we Yanks know it:

"Scotch whisky is whisky made in Scotland. In Britain, the term whisky is usually taken to mean Scotch unless otherwise specified. In other English-speaking countries, it is often referred to as "Scotch".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whisky

John

There you have it - more of that internet research in action.

Thanks, John. I'm going to end up owing you a beer (or a whisky).

I have to admit I'm more partial to the Irish than the Scotch, Tullamore Dew is my preferred dram.

Neat, no ice.

Yes, and it allows you to save for the things you really need, like guitars.

Kiwi303,

Sure and begorrah! A man after my own heart ! Uisce beatha (Gaelic for water of life).

Irish whisky is distilled 3 times, whereas Scotch whisky only twice. Peat is rarely used in the malting process, so Irish whisky has a smoother finish as opposed to smoky, earthy overtones common to some Scotches.

Are you a drinker of Tullamore Dew Original
Tullamore Dew Black 43
Tullamore Single Malt
Tullamore 10 year old reserve
Tullamore 12 year old special reserve
Tullamore Heritage

I used to move more between countries. Now less than before because it became boring to keep moving. Most teachers I meet just choose one country and never move, which means they miss out on one of the benefits of TEFL.

Cheers Smile

Maybe, but as you get older and have a family, you need more stability. That being said, I'd like to move again Smile

It is funny, I am moving back to the US.

I hope to do many one or two month camps during my summer vacations in the summer.

The move to a different country every two years thing sounds appealing but the problem is that if it's going okay where you are, it becomes a bit more difficult to chuck it all in for a leap into the unknown and a place where you no longer have a network of people recommending you to their friends as "excellent native speaker X that I studied with."

I came to Latvia planning to do only a year and I'm now in my sixth year of teaching here. I have ideas about shifting somewhere warmer next summer but I've said that so often that I'll only believe myself when I actually do it. In some ways for me it would be easier as well. I've no huge attachment to my "home country." Quite the opposite: these days I don't think about "moving back to the UK" I think of it in terms of "moving to the UK" and there are other countries which are much higher up the list of places I'd like to move to.

By the way in terms of booze, being Irish, we'd always spell it "whiskey" and I've usually preferred Bushmills or Jamesons rather than Tullamore. Johnnie Walker red label is the most revolting crap I've tasted.

I understand that. That's why it's best to move around when you are younger. Although I break my own rule on this, as I've been moving between East Asia and Portugal/Spain for a long time.

Where do you want to move to?

There's worse out there. Plus, if you're already in the bag, when someone slides you a shot of Johnnie Red you'll knock it back and go for noodles without thinking twice. You might have other thoughts in the morning, though.

Someone poured me a shot of something called Clan MacGregor once. Wasn't sure I could keep that one down.

If the shop stocks them, and only in 300ml bottles, the Scotch on the shelves are usually in 750ml bottles, fine for a party to get the cheap stuff like Teachers (Rough, sharp bitter aftertaste, but cheap) for a party.

Usual progression at a party is once the guests are too pissed to actually taste what they are drinking and the session has degenerated to drinking games to see who's first under the table, the nice stuff quietly dissapers off the table and bottles of the cheap stuff come out.

As to moving around... once a year or two in china, I'm thinking about the Ukraine, I correspond reguarly with some hot girls there Razz be nice to meet them sometime Very Happy

Right on. After the first several drinks one might as well be drinking after shave.

Ukranian chicks are smoking.
