Interesting that we are the only monogamous primate.

The monogamous "family" consists of one adult female, one male, and their offspring. Nonhuman primates that are monogamous tend to mate for life and are usually highly territorial. Gibbons and Indris are both typical of monogamous primates. In each case, these species are highly vocal and use loud calls to warn others that they "own" a territory.

Monogamous groups consist of an adult male and female with their children. When they are grown, the children leave to create their own nuclear families. While this group pattern is the most common one for humans, it is rare for non-human primates. It is found among the small Asian apes as well as some of the New World monkeys and prosimians. Specifically, monogamous family groups are the common pattern for gibbons, siamangs, titi monkeys, indris, tarsiers, and apparently some pottos.

I once worked for someone I always thought of as being one of the lower primates...

I stand corrected about us being the only monogamous primate- but stand by the statement that it doesn't seem to come as naturally for us as it does for some animals. (Do the primates you mentioned ever cheat, Henry?)

It also seems to me that family structures, like gender roles, exist in a state of flux, rather than statically. While two person marriage (sometimes literally monogamous, sometimes not) has been the norm throughout a lot of the history of many of the cultures we are heir to, there are other models around. (There are still communities in Ecuador that, up until very recently, believed in multiple paternity. Please discuss)

I guess that the modern model of marriage doesn't suit me, due to its exclusiveness. (Meaning that many societies give privileges to those that adhere to this model, but the model is not available to all.) I'm also uncomfortable with a society which is in many ways secular, and yet gives privileges to those who choose to adhere to what is, to many, a religious institution.

I don't think, Rusmeister, that we need to argue the definition of discrimination. "Discriminate against" is clear. You don't discriminate against poisonous mushrooms, do you? Very Happy

There are many employment circumstances, however, where unmarried persons are compensated less than married ones for the same labor. This seems discriminatory to me.

My relationship with my "partner" is a highly personal matter. I don't feel that it should directly affect my professional life.

But you don't have to look far to find job adverts for employers who figure they'll spend less money on a teacher who is unmarried.

Best,
Justin

refer to the person I live with as my "partner," for a variety of reasons. We aren't married, so many of the usual labels are out, for accuracy's sake. But I'm not 100% comfortable with "girlfriend;" having reached adulthood some years ago, she is not a girl, and in any case, we're more than friends. Or maybe it's just aesthetic. "Girlfriend" and "boyfriend" conjur up images of teenagers and dates in the movie theater...

you can conform and say "girlfriend" like everyone else and be understood by all or you can continue to say "partner" and needlessly stress everyone out.

Shocked

but I have a feeling that you will continue because you like having people think you are gay Twisted Evil

It would be a very good idea to get this thread back on topic.
