What exactly do you mean by Middle Eastern food? I found Lebanese cooking great and even before going to the Gulf for the first time I was lucky enough to enjoy an Iranian meal cooked by an Iranian lady in the UK. It was wonderful! Iranian bread is marvellous. Maybe you'd disagree but I think the Gulf States don't exactly stand out for their culinary delights. Iran, Syria, Lebanon are the best. Kuwait and Saudi are bottom of the league. |

Be careful with full fat salted butter, it is one of the causes of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I have heard that high blood pressure and heart attacks are high amongst the Americans and the British.
What about jacket Potato, Head-Chef Miski? Do you recommend it as a healthy food or not?
BTW, why they call it jacket potato and not jumper or coat potato?

Yes, I agree, Syria and Lebanon are the best in the world concerning healthy and tasty food. I would add that the Afghani bread called 'Tamis' is the best and much better than the Iranian bread.
The gulf states do not have a culture of 'cuisine', their traditional 'cuisine' is the 'camel milk' with dates and honey, and the white coffee with 'Zanjabil'.
So, Head-Chef Miski, what is the menu for our dinner today?
Please, no salted butter or red meat! |

You may be right, Miski. However, I once took my wife, who was on a visit to Kuwait, to a nice little restaurant called (I think) Umm Habib near the Sheraton and the churches. Typical Kuwaiti restaurant etc. but when I asked my students about it they said they had never heard of it and said that they would take their wives to Friday's or Fudrucker's. |

I'm still intrigued by your nationality, 007.
You've given us so many clues. I reckon you are either Turkish, Syrian, Lebanese or Palestinian. (Maybe Cypriot?)
I'm sure, though, that it is a secret you will take to the grave. |

007's definitely male, and muslim, and no way his mother speaks English as her native language. His mindset's clear in his posts.
BUT that makes him a valuable contributor to the forum, so long as you understand his point of view!!

| And I too got so sick and tired of people who had bought into the idea that hamburgers and hot dogs are the American diet. Those are two things that were and are never eaten in my home. That is summer picnic food at best. We never visited fast food places... and I never tasted Coke or Pepsi until I was in college and thought they were disgusting and I only purchase them for guests. |
Well then you are definitely in the minority. You grew up in a different time. What do young people in the US eat these days? A large chunk of them, ranging from a sizeable minority to a majority (depending on city and state) eat fast food and packaged unhealthy snack food for several meals in a week. That's certainly what I saw when I was in the US for 6+ years, among children, teens, college students, and even adults. Burgers, Pizza, fried chicken, fries, pancakes, bacon strips, Oreos, Pringles, vast quantitites of carbonated drinks, "Energy" drinks (Red Bull, Bison, Power Horse, etc), etc, are the commonest foods eaten, day in and day out, especially by the young.

| There is real maple syrup. It costs about $5 for a couple of ounces. Rich snots eat that. Real people eat the cheaper fake version made by Aunt Jemima. |
Nice generalizations. I can make some too, which are far more accurate:
Replace
"Rich snots" with "health-conscious people", or "people who eat real food" or "people who refuse to eat garbage" (minority of people)
Replace
"Real people" with "people who eat garbage" or "people who don't know sh** about food" or "people who don't care what they put in their bodies or in their children's bodies" (vast majority of people)
Remember, everything you eat affects your brain ultimately, whether you acknowledge it or not. Especially the kind of fats and the kind of carbohydrates, as well as various natural and artifical chemicals present in small amounts in foods. Very important for growing children (developing BRAIN). No wonder the quality of children in schools in a lot of countries is going down the drain, both in terms of intelligence and behaviour. And if you look at where it is happening, you will see vast amounts of junk food being consumed in those countries. Food has a big effect on behaviour and intelligence, but most people don't know much about that.

| It's nice to hear a North American speaking well of their cuisine. I'm sick of Spanish people telling me that Americans live on hamburgers and nothing else. |
This is really ironic sheikh. Most of the the foods that she (canadashirleyblue) added to her list were basically some more junk and snack foods! (pickels, Miracle Whip, Aunt Jemima pancake mix, concentrated sugar syrup with caramel coloring, etc), so how does that change the opinion of the majority of the world that in general Americans consume vast quantities of junk food, whether hamburgers, or other things? That's a known fact. Of course, now people in the Gulf countries have caught up, and perhaps surpassed Americans in consumption of certain things, probably carbonated beverages, pizza, "energy" drinks, potato crisps (Pringles, Lays).
And I wouldn't exactly call hamburgers, pickles, mayo (fake at that!), pancakes from a mix, and sugar syrup "cuisine" |

Forgot to say, it is quite telling that you would call someone a "snot" because they eat real maple syrup. As I said, maybe some of us can appreicate real natural products, whereas others survive and thrive on highly processed chemical laden artifically flavored and colored garbage. Being a snot has nothing to do with whether one eats real maple syrup or some garbage. One could be some caviar-eating cigar smoking sophisticated person, but at the same time, could be completely down to earth, and one could be some lard eating mary jane smoking white trash, but at the same time, could be a jerk. And VICE VERSA.
You also assumed that everybody who consumes real maple syrup is "rich." Far from it. That is such a horrible generalization! It all depends on how much one consumes it, and how frequently. If one goes through a bottle of real maple syrup every few days, yeah, that person is probably well off. But if someone buys real maple syrup once a month or so, one doesn't have to be anywhere near rich to do that. I am far from rich, as after all the monthly payments for various things, I am only left with SR. 1,500 or so. But at the same time, I enjoy myself, and every month, I buy a couple of specialty or unusual food products (but only natural, no processed artifical grabage). For example, Norwegian smoked salmon, some fancy cheese, marzipan, balsamic vinegar from Modena, gourmet chocolate, etc.
But, my staple diet is of course, far more mundane, but at the same time, still devoid of processed garbage (fast food, junk food, snacks). I eat lots of fruits, vegetables, beans, cheese/yogurt, nuts, meat/chicken/fish, whole grain porridges (steel cut oats/wheat/barley for breakfast), etc. Sure, once I week I would eat or drink something that's not so good for me (and then I feel sick for some time... so it is great that my body is rejecting harmful foods). Oh, and LOTS of EVOO (extra virgin olive oil). Minimal amounts of rice or fats other than EVOO. If I make any baked products or pancakes, they are always from scratch using whole wheat flour or white + whole, wheat germ, bran, oats, etc.
As for sugar, I stopped using white sugar a long time ago. I use brown sugar, honey, or raw sugar (available in "bagalas" run by Pakistanis/Indians... it is fabulous!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaggery ) to sweeten my tea, baked goods, porridge, etc. I have yet to buy real maple syrup! I have seen it at supermarkets (SR. 20 for 150 ml.), but for some reason, haven't bought it yet myself, but have tried it at someone's place (was lovely!). Aside from maple syrup, I also want to experiment with Golden syrup, molasses, and raw cane syrup for sweetening. Anybody have experience with those?
Shirley, after all the money you spend that you tell us in that other thread, the least you can do for yourself is spend $5 on real maple syrup once in a while (on pancakes from a mix?!)... don't worry, it won't make you a rich snot!
EDIT: Some info for everybody:

Imitation maple syrup
Many "maple-flavored syrup" are imitations (table syrups), which are less expensive than real maple syrup. In these syrups the primary ingredient is most often high fructose corn syrup flavored with sotolon, with little (2-3 percent) or no real maple syrup content. They are usually thickened far beyond the viscosity of real maple syrup. Since U.S. labeling laws prohibit these products from being labelled "maple syrup," many manufacturers simply call the imitation "syrup" or "pancake syrup." Qubcois sometimes refer to imitation maple syrup as sirop de poteau ("pole syrup"), a joke referring to the syrup as having been made by tapping telephone poles. |
And this is cool:

Chemistry
It possesses some nutritional value, containing calcium (greater than milk, by volume), potassium (more than bananas, by weight), manganese, magnesium, phosphorous, iron, and thiamin. It also contains traces of vitamins B2, B5, B6, B7 and B9, and many amino acids and phenolic compounds. A serving that includes 50 ml of maple syrup contains the following recommended daily allowances: Calcium 6%, Iron 5%, Manganese 2%, Thiamin 6%, Riboflavin 2%. Its caloric value is around 40 per tablespoon (15 ml), compared with 64 for honey and 60 for corn syrup. |

Really trap... you have gone to great lengths just to insult and theoretically score useless points. One doesn't live on either Maple Syrup - fake or otherwise - or Miracle Whip.
No one claimed that any of this is healthy... nor eaten daily.
Personally I am sick and tired of all the claims of this is healthy and this isn't... since they change it every few years. Butter is horrible, eat margarine. WAIT!! No margarine is even worse... go back to butter. Eggs are horrible, only eat one a week. WAIT!! No they're actually the perfect food, you can eat them every day. Chocolate is horrible for you. WAIT!! Dark chocolate is health food!
I give up... eat what you want. Keep your weight in a healthy range and exercise. And stop listening to or reading the supposed gurus. Life is short...

They say that you are what you eat. I think this is true to a certain extent.
BUT, I think, the most important thing is to keep your BMI (Body Mass Index) between 18.9 and 24.9, and you will be OK, and hopefully no Cholesterol and high blood pressure. If your BMI is equal or greather than 30, then you are in trouble!
If you want to check your BMI, just click on the following link:

BTW, my BMI is 24.7.
Yes, VS, life is short, and the majority of people forget this fact. But death is not short!
May God bless you. |
