We've discussed the "independiente" work visas here numerous times. This status is applicable to FM2 or FM3.

Mine doesn't have the word independiente ANYWHERE on it nor did I have to write a letter saying I wanted to work independently. It says I can do ANYTHING as long as it's honest. I do have to let migracion know within 30 days after being hired by someone.

No work visa will have the word "independiente" on it. People just refer to it as an independent work visa, because they can work independently without being sponsored by employers.

jfurgers, could you please share the exact wording, (in Spanish) that's in your visa? There are several readers of this forum who presently hold this same type of visa. Not all were issued in Mexico City, obviously, though both Mo39's and Notamiss's were. Geoaronsen posted previously he had one issued in Merida, etc. It would be interesting to compare the wording in yours with others.

Here's the wording in my FM3 (under "Anotaciones Complementarias"):

"Prestar servicios como maestra del idioma ingls de manera independiente [my underlining] con domicilio particular en Mxico, D.F."

Here's mine, an FM2. When I got it, it was a change in status from being authorized to work for a certain specific employer:

Se autoriza cambio de actividad dentro de la calidad caractarstica migratoria de Inmigranto Tcnico, para desarrollar actividades como Traductora de Documentos del Espaol al Ingls, en forma independiente, dejndose sin efecto la autorizacin de la pgina 15.

Oops, I'm outed. Not a teacher. Bye.

I will Samantha, I just haven't had the time here lately. I should be able to do it this evening or Wednesday evening. I will tell you this. Our marriage is now recognized in Mexico, but NOT with migracion. We have to fill out a form, pay 600 pesos then return the receipt back to migracion. We have to do this because if we don't, everytime I take one of the forms to them showing where I'll be working, I'll have to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,800 pesos.
But if they have on record that our marriage is recorded with them, I don't believe we have to pay anything because I'm married to a Mexican. I start training in another institute tomorrow and once I start working for them I have 30 days to fill a form out and take it to migracion along with a letter from the institute telling how much I'll be making and my title.
A minor inconvenience though.

Please just take a moment and share what's written in your FM2. It will be useful to sort out what status you were given.

To summarize (and for those with poor Spanish), he has the right to reside in Mexico by virtue of being married to a Mexican national, while not being financially dependent on her, and can do any legitimate and honest work, as long as he notifies migra when he gets it, and within 30 days of the authorization - i.e. he has to get work in order to keep the FM2/3.

I have to admit, this is the first of this kind I've heard of.

A tip to anyone - just make sure you are doing what you're supposed to be doing around the time of renewal, and you won't have problems.

Recognized in the country but not by immigration? Did I miss a step? We submitted our marriage certificate to the registro nacional de extranjeros through migracion... is that the 600 peso process youre talking about?

Im not sure if we're ALMOST there or if there are still steps left to take...

Phil K: There is a work authorization that can be granted to men from, for example, Guatemala, or El Salvador, etc. that are living here and supporting Mexican wives. It is a special concession, where they must stay working at all times, but they don't have to pay the fees that other foreigners pay. This would apply to carpenters, abanils, etc. who obviously don't have credentials but have a Mexican family to support. I guess the Constitution of Mexico comes into play here. I somehow hadn't pictured a foreign teacher with credentials having to go this route. A tax accountant would be a very important of this step.
