| Well, hopefully what comes around goes around - I'm just trying to buy myself some good karma points, after all you never know when you may need someone's help yourself right? |

| Thanks, yamahuh. She's going to call me back pretty soon, I think. |

| Rooster, it is just my two cents but you should probably go to China anyways. I think the prospects are better in China. |

You're probably right, I'll probably need to move to China. From what I'm reading, there is no shortage of jobs there whatsoever. I posted my resume here on Dave's and got quite a few responses.
I'm going to pursue Yamahuh's lead and a few more while job hunting here is still basically free (I've paid my rent through February 20 and I'll have a small income trickling in until February 17). However, my hopes are not high. I can't tell you how many times my agent has told me "this is a sure thing," or someone in an Internet forum has said "all you need is a degree and a pulse." Thousands of actual certified teachers in the US are being laid off at an alarming rate -- and then they come over here. And compete with me.
I'll probably have to go to China.
I've been negotiating with some recruiters for China, and just like I remember from '07 - '09, they are the most ethics-lacking, lying, deceitful, bait-and-switch-oriented, slimeballs with whom I've ever had the displeasure of doing business.
For example, I had an interview last week for a position in Yanbian (my preferred location) that supposedly pays 6,000 RMB a month and is at a public middle school. Then they sent me the contract to sign -- Changchun, paid hourly at 62.5 RMB an hour (less than 5K a month assuming I teach 20 hours, and there was nothing in the contract about minimum hours -- HELLO, 3K A MONTH!), and actually not a public middle school, but a buxiban. What the hell?!
I've experienced some unethical practices here in Taiwan as well, but I can't imagine how bad it's going to be when I go to China. I haven't even worked in China yet, and it's already awful -- the recruiters themselves have already made my experience teaching in China a sour experience before I've even begun! I have a big sense of justice and can't just look the other way while my employer steals a couple grand, the way some other teachers can.
I've done some calculations and figured out that savings-wise, 35,000 NTD is equivalent to 5,000 RMB. 40,000 NTD is equivalent to 6,000 RMB. However, I think that my girlfriend, freedom of speech, access to good libraries with large English sections, the convenience of Taipei, etc. are worth at least 5,000 NTD a month, so my "line of acceptability" is set at 30,000 NTD. If I find anything above that, I stay. If I don't, I go. |

First off - You DON'T need to deal with Chinese recruiters.
There are tons of jobs online that reequire no recruiter introductions just post your resume up online, wait for the flood of offers, choose one, show up and start work.
Secondly: If you are convinced that you need a recruiter to open doors and give you some bargaining power with your employer there is only one that I have heard resoundingly good things about from most of the people who were employed by them.
Bucklands.

My friend in China has worked for them for 5 years and is making a very decent wage, they support him, never cheat him and always ensure he is paid his wages and contract bonuses on time. They have contacts all over China so you can pick and choose your location within reason from what I understand.
They have a web site so you may want to take a look |
