As Heart seem to still be filling positions, I think people have been working while waiting for their documents to be processed. No idea whether or not it's legal. Quite a few of the intake for this year were elsewhere in Japan trying to find work when they got it with Heart.
Someone else on these forums mentioned doing this as a way to get round the one way ticket thing; you may be able to go through the process of booking a flight out of Japan and print off the page with all the details on it before you actually confirm the booking.
The airline itself is not going to check your visa etc, they're just going to sell you a one way ticket. It's immigration in Japan that you may have to convince. |

This is incorrect. It is the airline check-in staff at your departure airport that you have to convince, as it is the airline that gets in trouble with Japan Immigration if it is found they are carrying people to Japan on one-way tickets without long-term stay visas.
I have had my passport thoroughly scrutinised by airline ground crew before being able to check-in on flights to Japan where I didn't have a ticket out, and there are stories here and elsewhere of people being made to buy expensive tickets out of Japan at the departure airport in order to be allowed to board.
Immigration on the other hand is very unlikely to ask if you have a ticket out unless for some reason they single you out for extra checking. |

Snap on Apsara's experience!
I've had mine and have seen many others having their passports checked quite throughly when they were flying into Japan on a one-way ticket.
I even had Aeroflot staff check then get my passport double checked in London when I was flying in to Moscow because I had a one-way onward flight to Narita and wasn't likely to have my passport checked when I transferred.
One of my auncles works for Air France, and he said that the airline can be fined about 10,000 euros for each person turned away by the destination's immigration if it is discovered that the airline allowed them to travel without the necessary/correct paperwork, tickets, visa, etc for that country. The airline will also have to provide immediate passage back home for that person; that passenger is not obligated to pay for that, so again, added expense for the airline... if only 100 passengers got turned back in a single day, that airline would be liable for in excess of a million euros!
So Joel, why are you convinced that the airline is not going to check your visa? And how do they know who to make buy an onward/return ticket if they are not checking for visas? |

| MOD EDIT with regards to Japanese working visa and entering Japan just seems to get worse and worse. If you apply to Heart [or any other legit school that will be your sponsor]several weeks ahead of the contracted start date proposed there is no reason why they cannot process the documents required ahead of your departure-in the current economic climate of ESL why the hell would anybody fly into a country with a market flooded with teachers pounding the street looking for work without a working visa/sponsored position? When I agreed to work for Heart 3 years ago, while aware of their shall we say 'lowish' salary-220.000 month in Saitama for full-time [sorry 'semi'] High School position, one of the pluses for me was that visa's were provided for both myself and my wife. Heart's idea now is to provide nothing in advance. You [potentially] fly into Japan with what? A bullshit story for the airline/immigration regarding your ticket situation? What do you have from Heart? A 'gentleman's agreement made over the phone that they will provide you with sponsorship and a job? Heart will 'over recruit' based upon their assumption/speculation of how many BOE contracts they are able to get. makes sense from their point of view-what happens when some other ALT company is able to undercut Heart's offer and obtain the contract? Newbie is possibly out of a job/in Japan/no return ticket! Wouldn't recommend it.... |

That happened in Kashiwa this year when Heart suspiciously lost their big contract at the last moment. Everyone lost the jobs that they were already hired for and moved there for. |

| Do you know which company got the Kashiwa contract or what happened there? I actually have a friend who was offered a job in Kashiwa. |

I'm still there but after the six week summer break I've decided I might like to move to Tokyo. Nothing to do with Heart really, apart from wanting to earn more money and knowing that with the nature of dispatch it's more than likely I'll have to relocate at the end of the school year anyway. |

ssjup, to answer your question slightly, I read one Negative review where a girl moved from West Japan I think all the way to Mito for the job and when she got there they said it wasn't available anymore after they'd promised it to her. That was from a handful of years ago, though.
And then there's a Facebook group with 6 members that all say that they got cheated out of their contract-end bonuses or something along those lines. |
I know a girl who was so royally screwed out of money by them that she had to live in the company car. Her apartment didn't even have a shower in it. |
Hahaha, I found this thread on Gaijinpot while searching for something totally unrelated. Enjoy!

(The blog is down, but there's a lot of stuff discussed in the thread and it's clearly about the girl in question. The car thing is even mentioned) |

Oh dear! Lisa, do you actually know her or do you 'know' her from reading her blog?
That thread makes for an interesting read. I'd have liked to have been able to read the blog, but it sounds to me as though she gets money deducted for being off school, which happens quite a lot. The half pay in summer does suck but it's difficult to feel much sympathy when she knew it was coming months before it did.
Someone made a good point about the contract situation and the number of things that aren't legal. I signed it knowing a fair bit (having read these forums - thanks Glenski et al) about what and wasn't legal, thinking that should there be any difficulties there's plenty of stuff I could take straight to the labour office.
Actually I've just carried on reading and it sounds very much like the girl is an idiot. |

From the person that was defending the girl the whole time:
| Quote: |
| To be fair when she came to Japan, she came with a friend and that friend who worked for the same company had a much better and different experience then her and refused to help her out. |
