What are some undesirable locations for women, particularly slightly chunky ones?

Middle east in strict sharia law states where you wouldn't be allowed out of the house without a male relative as minder, or allowed to drive, and wearing a bikini will get you tarred and feathers, also rapists get to walk free but the victim gets stoned to death...

Or, slightly more optimistically, where are good locations for women to go? |
What's your orientation? The Isle of Lesbos might be good.

I'm a slightly chunky woman in my sixties here in Mexico, and I have a gentleman admirer who thinks I'm fine just the way I am. |

I'm a slightly chunky man, and I tend to dig slightly chunky chicks, so things just tend to work out for me. |

Lucky.
I've been to Mexico, and I'm not a fan of the catcalling or the other aspects of machismo culture. I felt really, really threatened there. Maybe it's because I'm in my twenties and, up until recently, I've only weighed 90 pounds. (The weight gain is due to a new medication.)
Too bad I wasn't lucky enough to have been born in the EU. I looovvveeed traveling through Europe, and I wish I could work there.
Mideast in general is out: not only because of how they treat women, but also because I'm a Natalie Portman Jew (i.e., keep kosher by being vegan in the US/vegetarian overseas, etc). Israel in specific is an option, though. Does anyone know what it's like there? I do dress conservatively by American standards, and I am a secular Jew. |

Sorry to hear about the cat calls in Mexico. So exactly how chunky are we talking about here???
Israel might work better for you. You can always try India, I hear men NEVER cat call women in that country. |

I was really thin when I went to Mexico: 5'1'' (155 cm) and 90 pounds (41 kg). That's about an American size 0 to 00. Right now I'm an American size 8. Which is so fat I can't buy clothes in Chinese stores and get subjected to all kinds of fat shaming on the street.
On the plus side, I have never been catcalled here or groped by a man. YAY!

The problem with Israel is that my Israeli friends are guys. They really want me to come, and the guys in specific aren't terribly observant. A couple of my female friends went there when they were teens via Birthright. But that's only for a few days, so you can't really trust that.
I'm not sure about India. All of the women I've known who have gone there have said street harassment is pretty bad. Mumbai also just got one of the new Hollaback sites: http://jezebel.com/5747805/the-war-against-street-harassment-goes-global. But maybe it's location: my friends' families are from Mumbai and Guarjaredi (sp?). Where do your friends work? |

Is it considered poor form to bump one's own thread?
I'm still leaning toward Cambodia and Laos. Money isn't the biggest motivator for me. A relaxed environment tops my list. |

Its definitely bad form to bump his own thread if it sux!
This is a very valuable thread in my opinion. Many people know little about the various countries and cultures in the world (Most Americans), so many need help on places to avoid.
Earlier I said "East Texas" as the last place I would want to teach. Today I choose to add: Afghanistan, Antarctica, and France.
I recommend China only at this point and time..
Yes, this is a viable thread and deserves a new life. |

Heck, I'd do Antarctica, if I could find any students. I'm already straddling the Arctic Circle. Why not?
Thanks for the support, Trebek. I'm still interested to know about places folks hate out there. It's like marking a minefield for the platoon behind you. |

Let me add a few more places for you. Most of Europe if your American.
Anywhere that has Hutus and Tutsis living near each other. Any country that still has cannibalism (there are a few) other than an isolated incident. And Monaco (can't afford it). Many people dislike working in the "Country that shall not be discussed or named", but many do.
Sounds like you will be happy most places Steinmann, if your planning another stint at the Arctic circle. |

I did Europe when I was in the military - lived in Germany and traveled all over. I liked it well enough, but I don't think I'd want to settle there.
Some spots in Africa would be cool, but I understand that in most places on the continent English is already spoken, and in places where it isn't, wages are a pittance.
I'll be here in the frozen north (though not freezing just now) for a while yet. The money's too good to give it up and I have to wrap up some personal debt. When that's discharged, I'll be headed west (from here) over the pond. Where I land is anyone's guess. You're right about one thing, though - I can make myself happy just about anywhere. |

Bumping again, then.
I read on another thread somewhere around here where the poster swore that he would never teach in Mexico. Recent news reports lead me to believe that it's not exactly safe there, but it can't be that bad.
Also, I hear that it's a hoot to cruise the Mekong and simply stop at various villages and ask for work. All sorts of interesting things reportedly happen. |

| I would have problems adjusting to middle east countries too, and I definitely wont recommend any of my female friends to go there. |

I think undesirable in this case means a hard to get visa? I can't see Europe being an undesirable location for too many people.
For me, Morocco. I couldn't see any benefit of living there, and it did nothing for me at all. Saying that, I used to think Thailand was fantastic and a place to settle down. Now I think it's an OK place for a holiday, but that's it.
I'm probably about to take a (non-teaching) job back in the UK, and to be honest, I'm looking forward to it. |

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Don't get me wrong, I love the city, I was born and raised there. But the ESL market sucks, even for people with decent qualifications (related degree and TESL certificate). If you have a great qualifications (MA in TESOL plus some experience), the great jobs are so scarce that you still might not make enough to pay your rent
And if you have "no" qualifications (unrelated degree, minimum TESL certificate like CELTA), you are looking at making even less than Starbucks (which offers employee and education incentives!).
I can never understand why people think they can go there without any qualifications, as if the job prospects are similar to China or Korea But they do. I saw it all the time. Teach English all week, snowboard in Whistler on the weekend. Yeah, right |
