Ah, all of this talk about food is making me hungry. The food here in China is great, I can't get enough of it ... but unless I can get somebody to eat with me, I usually end up with a fried egg sandwich at home. I don't like leaving the house on my own - all the staring is quite uncomfortable! I guess that's why I am always inviting my students out to eat with me ...

I can't believe the food is bad in Mexico, loz - say it ain't so! Mexican is certainly one of my favorite cuisines, but if it isn't any good in Mexico, I won't know what to think of it. So if "fast living" can't be had in Mexico, can't be had in Spain, and certainly can't be had in China, where does it exist?

I'm not saying all food in Mexico is bad, anthyp. I've eaten some food that was so completely delicious as to elicit "Oh my god, I can't believe I'm eating such a joyous meal. I don't want it to end." type of remarks. Food in Veracruz is generally great, ceviche by the sea, chilaquiles after a big night, tortas in Oaxaca, ummm.. can't think of any more just now.

BUT, have you ever seen any of these things in your average "Mexican" restaurant? "Mexican" food that you're probably thinking of (great big burritos, nachos, enchiladas with lashings of red tomatoey sauce and jack cheese) is not typical Mexican food. Its typical Texan food...

Mexican food, while often very tasty, is usually composed of various combinations of tortillas and some kind of meat, and all cooked in LARD. My bizarre stomach problem is caused by a genetic inability to deal with too much fat in my diet, and in Australia most people say "You've got what???" when I tell them about it. Here, the condition is quite normal, although its caused by the large fat intake of most people, rather than dodgy genes.

So, why don't I cook at home, you ask??? Well, that's a whole other story, to be saved up for when we all have that beer in Ethspa�a! Wink

At least all this eating out has cured me of my dislike of sitting in restaurants alone. And the staring? Well, I just stare right back!! Shocked

I'm amazed that my little post about movies has now gone on to 7 pages! I get the impression it has now become more about a bunch of bored, lonely people sitting around talking about stuff, rather than "how to's" for Spain. Maybe we should start a forum of our own??? Wink

If you ever come back to Spain, Anthyp, there'll be a chilled Estrella Damm waiting for you. And if I ever come to China (which many of my ex-students are urging me to do), I'll look you up for an egg sandwich, ok?

As for jobs, would either of you sane and eloquent people really want to work with a fruitcake like me? Come on...

That'll be Cruzcampo, which is my personal favourite.

Anyway, I've just spent all morning reading this thread (thanks Lozwich!) and after careful thought and taking all factors into consideration I would just like to say that you are all barking mad. So I feel quite at home.

I would like to take issue with you on some outrageous claims made, though:
1. Everybody knows that the best film ever made was 'It's a wonderful life' with 'The Great Escape' coming a close second.
2. Talking of English contributions to the world, has everybody forgotten John Prescott?!
3. Thierry Henry is by far the best football player in the world (I know football hasn't been mentioned but I thought I'd throw it in) and
4. The best band ever, without a doubt, is U2, whose lead singer is so talented he has also managed to break into Spanish politics and is currently the Minister of Defence in Zapatero's government.

Loz, sorry, my mistake, John Prescott is actually Welsh!.

Thierry Henry most definitely isn't. He's French and plays for Arsenal FC in England. The sport, of course, is football, that's the one where people run around after a round ball and where it is generally considered unnecessary to wear a helmet and armoured plating, which is powerful enough to withstand an RPG round fired at point blank range.

As for Mr Bono, I wouldn't disagree with what you think of him, I just think the music has a good beat, especially 'Where the streets have no name' Actually that sounds like the town where I live.

I am only posting here because I noticed that Mouse is the last person to have posted in 15 of the Spain forum threads, and I know he's kind of sensitive about that. I picked up a U2 CD at the store the other day, thinking it was that fabulous Greatest Hits + B - sides package, but it was the Best of the 90's instead, cripes. I'd complain more but it only cost me one dollar. Ah well that's all for today, I have class tomorrow morning so I'd better go to bed soon ... also I'm out of coffee.
