I tried to get ADSL.

For the first few hours of talk, all the salespersons were quite encouraging, asking me to call another number or wait on hold.

Then it came down to the crunch and they demanded the name of a Taiwanese guarantor who would pay my bill if I skipped the country. None of the Taiwanese whom I knew were willing to sign on as a guarantor.

Then I heard that cable modems did not require a guarantor. I went through another few hours of trying to call the right number, trying to use broken Mandarin to ask for someone who spoke English.

I got a promise to sign me up promptly in three business days with no more guarantee than my passport number.

Then I got a call on my cellphone in broken English. The import of the call was that without an ARC, I would not be allowed to sign up, and the promised installation would be cancelled.

Is it possible to get home Internet access without a guarantor or ARC?

I got it when I was on an ARC, but they forgot to ask to see it. There is a chance you could lie and they'll never know. Maybe say you've forgotten to bring it.

The guy up at Seednet in Nova lied to me and said the phone line and ADSL would cost no more than NT$500 per month - it's more like twice that.
