No one seemed clear on what would happen if you left before HCT's established probation, and by no one, I also mean HCT's HR Representatives.

So here it is to the best of my understanding.

For the first year of the three year contract you must give 3 months notice, and after the first year 6 months notice.

What happens if you don't give three months notice? Well, I tried to copy a picture of a rectal exam since I think that best describes it, but since the picture wouldn't paste, I'll explain.

1.You will have to pay back a pro-rated amount of the 30,000 they handed to you when you got here.
2. They will give you a money for a repatriation ticket
3. THIS IS THE BIG ONE THAT THEY NEGLECTED TO TELL ME WHEN I ASKED: they will charge you for each day (same amount you'd be paid) you didn't work within the probation notice. In my example, I told them I would leave mid-year after the first semester. Evidently this was one month short of the 3 month notice, so they charged me $6,000 for the one month I didn't work and violated the 3 month notice rule.

Now, I'm not saying this is so horrible and unruly. I mean, are all rectal exams bad? However, what was really crap was HR. Before I making my mind up I tried to ask them for specifics about leaving and the consequence, and they failed to let me know that I would be charged for the time I didn't give in notice. Now, luckily this just cost me $6,000 (just), but had I not understood this and left with no notice, they could have surprised me with an $18,000 tab to leave this blessed country.

So.....this is my gift to DAVES ESL.....a hard-earned bit of knowledge I'm offering up.

And how would they have stopped you? Exit visas are not required. You could have just left - paid your own ticket - and they have no way of getting the money from you once you are gone. (teachers abscond all the time from many different employers, I have never heard of any employer going after them to get any money owed... just don't plan to ever work in that country again)

Your explanation of the $6000 wasn't very clear. What month didn't you work? If the notice is 3 months, why did you not just count the days and say that I am leaving 3 months from the date of this letter?

Sorry it didn't work out...

I know. It's hard to explain clearly since it's so ridiculous. HCT asks you to give them 3 months notice before you leave. I can understand this; however, I gave them 2 months notice and said I'd leave after the end of the first semester because in my own mind I though, "Why would they want me to start another semester and just leave after a month...etc..." When I asked the HR person she only told me about paying back the pro-rated 30,000 getting started money. What she didn't tell me was that if you leave sooner that the 3 month notice period, they will charge you for?? not giving them notice. So the one month I didn't give them in notice they actually charged me the money they would have paid me by working. I just found out about it and have to get clarity.
It's messed up. Someone did advise me to just take off over Christmas, but I have such a guilty paranoid conscious that I knew that wouldn't work for me.
I'll get over it, but I"m going to raise a little fuss over the incompetence of the HR in explaining my contract.

Well, at least I can say I tried it and came out with just a little change in my pocket. I was always curious about what it was like over here, and now I've seen it. Funny, some people stay for 17+ years, so it must work for them, but for me no. The boys are too unmotivated and contentious and the country is too sterile and strangely conservative for this hippy American. Smile

Why are you leaving so soon? Just curious.

If you read her past posts, she talks about her issues with the male students. They can be a handful.

Im still a bit confused. (common problem when it comes to employer activity... blah...) So... you were expecting them to pay you for three months even though your notice was for two months? Are they paying you for every month that you worked? Are they paying you up to your day of departure? Or are they not paying you for the last month that you are in the country?

It is a good thing that you didn't go to Saudi. It makes the UAE look like Las Vegas. Laughing

Yeah. I just looked at older posts. So, in and around 40's, bored and single with a dog and identifies oneself as a hippy type but going to an arab country to find adventure and possibly meet someone -- may not have been the wisest choice made.

I personally would have gone to South America where there are other hippie types in their 40s. Just my 2 cents.
