Does anyone know anything about the possibilities for working on the east coast of Taiwan, like Taitung or Hualien (I don't mean Ilan). I have never seen jobs advertised for either of these two places, I get the impression that they don't need to advertise because the jobs are snapped up very quickly. Is that true? Has anyone tried to find a job down there? |

That's strange...I've seen jobs advertised in these places. Jobs in Hualien tend to be lower paying and personally I don't find the idea of living in Taitung appealing at all. You're right though the bulk of the jobs there aren't advertised as they generally don't need to as Hualien sells itself. |

Don't know why I didn't answer this one earlier. You see, I live here --"here" being Hualian. Nice place, although it's kinda getting crowded.
And matchstick_man is right. This place generally sells itself. Must be the mountains and the beaches. Every once in a while, however, you'll catch an ad in the paper about some high school or buxiban hunting foreign heads. Everyone says the pay over here is lower, but I don't care.
Just last weekend while driving around in Taroko Gorge, I picked up a man with no arms. He told me he lost them when he was 17 and working for his uncle's electric equipment maintenance company. HIS OWN FLESH AND BLOOD wouldn't even help take care of him, so now he lives off 3000 NT bucks per month and token appearances in sports competitions (because he's a helluva swimmer).
What does this have to do with making a living on the East Coast? Well, when I first got here, I was freaking out because I took a 50% pay cut. But I also took an 80% STRESS CUT and am much better off for it. The key, as my armless buddy Mr. Wu asserted, is a simplified lifestyle. The first chance I get, I'm gonna sell or donate this car and buy myself a Venox. Then I'm gonna stop buying expensive crap all together and just save for retirement.
With a little luck and by the Grace of God, I'll make it. |
