Sorry if that's a confusing title.
I accepted a job in Thailand and my wife and I will go there and receive the initial 30 day tourist visas. Does anyone know how long it takes to convert those visas into the ones we need to stay? I have heard mine will take 21-22 days, but unsure if it's the same for my wife.
Will a 30 day visa be enough time for my wife?
thx in advance if anyone has recently done the same and has some info |

So the short answer is no. a 30-day entry is not enough by itself.
Get double entry tourist visas (unless you have employment confirmed already). If you already have a job then a single entry visa for you and double for her.

2 issues.
Converting YOUR 30 day visa into a non-b requires a validity of 15 days AFTER your application for change of status at immigration.
In addition to those 15 days it will take, if the employer is on the ball, 7-21 days to get the paperwork needed to allow you to change your status.
In my experience it usually cannot get all done in time to be completed on a 30-day stamp.
It CAN be done easily in time if you have a 60-day tourist visa.
You cannot apply to change the status of your wife until you have your non-b and proof that your work permit has been applied for or work permit in hand. She also needs 15 days remaining on her visa at the time of the application for a change of status to non-O.
Alternatively, after you get your non-b you two can take a run up to Laos at get her non-O at the embassy there. Including travel/transit time it takes about 3 days and costs (depending you your nationalities) 4000 (van and Laos entry) for you and 6000 for her (less if she is from ASEAN).
She should have at least a 60-day entry and may be better off with a double entry visa (effectively allows up to 6 months to get it all worked out).
IF you are flying in on 30-day entry stamps then you can pretty much count on needing a run to Laos to get an additional tourist visa.

Awesome. Great info thanks, I'll grab a 60 or 90 day then so she won't have to exit to Laos. Appreciate all the help. |
