|
|
I've been teaching online with Tutor ABC for about a year. It's a great company and really stable - but I'm looking for another gig on the side. I was wondering if anyone could recommend other companies for teaching? I'm also interested in other online jobs. Perhaps correcting or editing papers/textbooks. I know there must be good companies out there, I just don't see them advertised anywhere.
Note: I've got about 5 years ESL teaching and editing experience. Currently getting my MA in linguistics, but taking a semester off for financial reasons.
Thanks for any info you can give me. |

You could start with an Internet search on online edit jobs; there seems to be plenty of opportunities once you weed out the scammy ones. |

I'm not sure how well editing pays on a freelance basis. Perhaps widen your search to include copywriting? |

What genre do you feel qualified to edit? I'm into scientific papers and have found a huge number of companies online that offer services.
If you don't mind volunteering your skills, many EFL/ESL journals have volunteer editorial staff. You often have to be a member of one of their organizations first, though.
Editing
Copyediting
Proofreading
These are good search terms, providing you know the difference among them. |

Thanks for your replies!
I have a journalism background and have been teaching grammar forever (it feels like). I heard about companies like ETS that correct student papers, but also thought there might be jobs editing ESL books, materials, etc out there. The problem with searching, as someone mentioned, is that there are SO many scams or jobs that end up paying 2 dollars an hour. Just wondering if anyone has first hand experience with a reputable company. |

Any test center that I have dealt with in the past has always done their correcting of student papers on site.
ETS or Cambridge test centers would be the place to apply but the work won't be on-line.

here's another question: Does anyone have experience with those online teaching companies like Speakle and italki where you set up a profile and set your own hourly rate and wait for students to choose you? |

Just curious, but do any Cambridge exam centres mark written work on-site? I always thought that CAE and FCE etc were send back to the UK for marking. (IELTS is marked on-site, of course...) |

Actually, I was confused by the wording. Why would any testing centre 'correct' papers? |

Pearsons hires people to correct writing tests - but the pay is low; it generally works out to not much over $10 an hour (unless it's gone up recently.)
I did it for a short time, but finally decided it just wasn't worth the bother.
Regards,
John |

Wow, that sounds pretty good. I went to their website, but can't find any job info. I'll contact them and let you know what they say. |

Update: They aren't hiring again till July. Might be a good thing to keep in mind though. |

As a former journalism grad myself, I've had good luck tutoring students for the written parts of exams such as IELTS, TOEFL etc. I get private students via my local university and posting on Kijiji or similar. Word of mouth has also brought me new students. I have one who is working on his thesis and applying for citizenship and I am helping him with both. |
