True, but the fact that you already had acknowledged that you would have to adapt is a biggie IMO. So many don't.

Like you said, a lot of people come to Japan with a specific reason for coming, or a certain expectation of what Japan is like. I've seen many of these people disappointed when they found that "real" Japan is different from "expected" Japan
Oh, so true!

-- in that regard, I think coming in with no expectation and no specific reason (other than teaching) helped me a lot in adjusting to living in Japan.
No expectation, yes, I agree largely.
No reason is what I have a hard time understanding.
