I remember seeing quite a bit more university job advertisements for the September 2012 term but not nearly as much for the March 2013 term.
Is this because most places choose to hire for the full academic year? |

Yes. Schools prefer to hire people for a one year period starting in Sept. I suspect the job openings at universities at this time of year, mid winter, are to fill holes left behind by people who bolted early. |

^^^ agree. My first paid employment in China was at a vocational college, starting after the spring festival for a similar reason to the one stated above. |

Mine too!
Additional reasons for Spring semester vacancies (in addition to replacing those who have 'bolted') are:
Replacing those teachers who were asked to 'bolt'.
Topping up on vacancies not filled in the Sept intake.
Additional students starting in Spring - often classes who have gained entry even though they didn't pass the Entrance exam. |
