Can anyone suggest cities where it is possible to save a decent amount of money? I'm interested in experiencing Chinese culture, so I'll probably tend towards the overall atmosphere more than anything, but are there any enjoyable cities which are a little bit cheaper than cities of similar quality? I'd prefer one which speaks predominantly Mandarin rather than Cantonese. |

Maybe you could narrow it down a bit more? Mandarin speaking? how about weather? What kind of food? Do you like the ocean? Obviously it's a huge country and there are hundreds of cities, maybe thousands of them, where you can save money and experience similar things.
I'll try come up with a few of my suggestions shortly. |

There is a thread on the China - off topic forum where we are discussing costs of living and general expenses. |

Linfen is an awesome little city - not only cheap, but also close to the nature. |

He wants to know what is a good city to work in, so yeah. Honestly, there are people who are full time employees who are paid to be anal about these things. No amateur posting Nazis needed.
Personally I am a big fan of GuangZhou - much Cheaper than BJ or SH |

I'd prefer a location which speaks Mandarin, and I'm not picky about the weather; in fact, I may prefer a slightly colder climate to a hot or humid one. I am a vegetarian, so I mostly plan on eating rice, tofu, and noodles. I'm not someone who frequents beaches but I would probably go occasionally if there was one nearby. I would also like a well-connected location as far as transportation. I'd prefer some restaurants and bars for nightlife, but it doesn't have to be anything extravagant because I'm not planning on spending too much while I'm there. |

One vote for Chengdu here. Cost of living can be low here (I like Chengdu because it's a city where if you spend a lot, it's because you have chosen to do so, not because everything is simply expensive and you can't avoid that--basic necessities can be affordable here).
Also, Chengdu is in the "Mandarin belt", with a bit of Sichuanhua to keep things interesting.
Warm regards,

How about Dalian's cost of living situation? Good choice for lower cost? |

Duyun, Kaili, Guiyang, all in China's (imo) most beautiful province. I worked in Duyun for 2 years and after a 10 minute walk from my house was some of the most lyrical countryside I've ever seen.
Isn't there an average kind of teaching salary these days - 6,000 pm, or such like? You get more in the megalopolises but you spend more and breathe poison. |

After years in China and on Dave's I can assure you that you don't want to tempt fate describing the mods in these terms. |

That is sage advice - if one is happy to live in fear of saying the wrong thing. Fortunately, I don't give a rats ass. It is well known that this is a business site where many posters cower in fear, not I. Viva la VPN |

+1 for Guizhou. I lived there for a year and a half and loved it. One of, if not the poorist province in China. Still untouched by all the commercialism happening all around us. Not that it isn't there, just not as prevailent. If you want to live near a real forest and not a concrete one, Guizhou is the place. Large minority population there, mainly the Miao.
Although I didn't hear many good things about Zunyi. From the people standpoint that is. |

Yo, go Guizhou!
I had a girlfriend down in Xingyi, in the south west corner, and that's beautiful too. Girlfriend wasn't bad either, but she was Dutch.
When I finished teaching there I set up and operated tours for westerners, starting in Guiyang then ending up in Yangshuo, Guangzhou, HK, but the tourists were mostly blown away by Guizhou. |
