It does really appear that anyone, irrespective of intelligence or ability, is able to get into a Taiwanese university these days. Over 94% of applicants who took the university entrance exam were admitted. It seems that the only way of failing to gain admission is to fill out the application form incorrectly. However, I'm sure these unfortunate students will gain access later once the authorities have fixed their forms. Of course every student that gains entry to a university helps the struggling tertiary sector survive another year when birth rates in Taiwan are at an all time low. According to yesterday's China Post, even with a 94.39% admission rate, "there were 217 vacancies in total this year, which is much higher than the 59 vacancies last year". What this means is that even by conscripting every person who is able to write their name on a form, Taiwan is still unable to put a bum on every university seat in the country. Having tried unsuccessfully to recruit students from China and SE Asia to make up the shortfall in students numbers, Taiwan has found itself without any more cards to play. The game is almost over . . .
