|
|
I spend a fair bit of time on Flickr, and thought it might be useful to have a photo group for ESL in China. The idea is straightforward - upload some photos showing your school, the place you live, and what there is to do in the immediate area. Since we don't always get adequate info from a school when applying for jobs, this could prove to be a useful photographic database/supplement for people considering moving to a new workplace. It's not intended to replace discussion or travel forums obviously but discussion can take place and questions can be asked. You don't need to be currently working at a place that you have photos for, as long as you have worked there should be fine.
You need a free Flickr account to join the group, and there are a few simple rules to follow, but after agreeing to those you're good. I've already added some photos to get it started, and am curious to see if this is something people are interested in before I spend any more time on it. If others follow suit, that would be great. If not, then I've lost 20 minutes of my life that I can't get back.

Hey who's Steve who's taking the pics in 2019?

This photo was taken on October 8, 2019 using an Olympus X-3,C-60Z. |
Curious to know if the locals have discovered fancy modernities like deodorant or using a tissue to pick their nose in the future, sir.
Great group idea anyhow. I'll join and throw up some pics in due course. |

I just hope someone posts a photo of the CTFU meetings.
In seriousness, I do being unable to post photos is a features Dave's would benefit from. Everything can be cold when its merely the written word, and a photo or two certainly adds something to a discussion I think. |

It used to be available, but it's been disabled. If you look up at the tool bar above where you write your posts you'll notice a button for "Img." I think the problem was similar to the avatar problem, people were uploading images that didn't have the right dimensions and it screwed up the pages.
Hopefully we'll get some photos of some of the crappier apartments or schools that people have lived in and worked at too, not just the nice stuff. |

Haha, at immediate glance at the above, I thought the acronym was "STFU".

Nah, most likely the image privilege was removed here because of some tool that used to post up really disgustingly inappropriate things over on the $ making forum that we aren't to speak of here. |

Did that have anything to do with a poster named "Whitjohn?" |

Do you take your pics with a traditional camera or do you use a phone camera? |

My photos were all taken with a Nikon D200 and a D300S. My iPhone takes half decent photos but I prefer the options my other cameras give me. The iPhone does make good video though, and I'll probably record something soon to add to the Flickr group. |

I used to take photos with a traditional camera. As a result, I didnt take very many photos. Now I have my nice phone camera and access to lots of different photo apps I take a lot more photos!
Id rather sacrifice a little in terms of picture quality and gain in terms of having a camera to hand and ready to roll. Im really looking forward to my next China job and being able to Instagram just about everything. |

Digital cameras revolutionized photography, in mostly good ways, but in a somewhat negative way too. With film cameras you never knew what you had till you processed the negatives, which also cost a lot more money, and not all photo labs did good work. Now with digital you get the results right away. Better for learning as you can delete and try again. This also made photography available to just about anyone who could turn on a camera and point it in the right direction. The downside is that the processor in the camera does so much of the work that a lot of the creativity of photography on the part of the photographer has been taken out of the equation almost entirely. What I'm trying to say is photography has just been made too easy today.

All depends on your priorities. Mine is the highest quality I can afford and for that I need a camera with more functions and I need to know how to use them. I'm one of those guys who actually reads the camera manual to figure out how to use everything and I do try all the functions to see which ones work for me. Most people just want ease of use, decent quality, and some attractive bells and whistles.
I've got two DSLRs, five lenses, two tripods, a flash unit, and various other gadgets. Nikon is about to release a new DSLR, the D7100, which is supposed to be very nice, and it might be my next camera. I think it'll be an upgrade on my D200. Another downside of digital, some of us feel the need to keep spending . . . Another downside of digital, people have been sort of tricked into thinking that a newer or better camera with higher resolution (more megapixels) will take better photos. Only partly true. What you need is a decent camera, but a good quality lens will have more bearing on how your photo turns out, and you also need to know how to use the gear properly. The number of megapixels is only relevant if you plan to make prints that are larger than say 5" x 8." Any camera with at least 10mp (which is almost all of them today) is more than enough.
I remember the first digital camera I ever saw, in 2001. I was in Russia and an American guy had this massive camera. The memory card was a 5.25in computer disk with a capacity of a whole 2mB. I don't think my current cameras can even make a file that small.
Wonder what Ansel Adams would think of all this . . . |
