Hello and thanks in advance for reading this and posting comments.

I am interested in working the UAE and, per the title, I am wondering if I am qualified enough or require additional certification (specifically an MA or an M.ED in TESOL) before applying to places when they start hiring again next spring.

I am an American female and my credentials are as follows:

- 3 years teaching ESL at a university IEP program (academic English with an emphasis in reading and writing)
- Experiences working with Middle Eastern students (over 90% of the program participants are from KSA)
- TESOL certification
- MA in Humanities

All of my work experience occurred after obtaining my degrees. My biggest worry is that since the MA is not in ESL, Education or Linguistics that it wont count.

I love the challenge of teaching reading and writing to college-bound students, so am not interested in getting a certificate to teach K-12. I am interested in a job that allows me to continue teaching college-age students while living in the UAE (preferably a larger city) with a reasonable salary and an area-standard benefits package.

Any advice or assistance would be much appreciated.

Your non-related MA could be an issue. However, if you emphasize your experience in academic writing and that you have uni experience with Arabic-speakers (avoid using "Middle Eastern" to describe the students), some employers may be willing to overlook your humanities degree.

Additionally, UAE uni foundation programs are really pushing technology for learning. If you're willing to go back into the classroom to boost your qualifications, you might consider completing a graduate certificate in educational technology, CALL, online teaching and learning, or something similar.

By the way, what did your TESOL certificate course entail? How many hours was it? Did it include a practical component? Employers don't always specify CELTA, but you should be clear about what your cert involved.

I think it is possible to teach into UAE with the said qualifications but I think you would have to get into one of the easier bordering countries like Oman or Saudi Arabia and after one year apply for jobs in UAE it is much easier that way. A lot of my colleagues in UAE have "done time" in Saudi Arabia before getting into the Emirates.

Probably not Oman; it seems a related degree is now the standard for teaching opportunities there.

Nomad-

I like the idea of refreshing my credentials with education technology. The program I work in uses technology quite a bit; students submit all writing online, use iPads in class and we use an interactive whiteboard called Eno in all our classes (part white board, part interactive touch screen, part computer + projector all in one). Is this enough, or should I still aim for an education technology certificate?

Try as I might, I couldn't find info on the CALL program you mentioned. Can you please elaborate or let me know what the acronym stands for?

Also, do you know if a distinction is made between certification from online courses versus brick and mortar schools? I ask because this could be a cost savings of USD 6,000.

Lastly, in answer to your question my TESOL certification was from Global TESOL and involved 120 hours of learning and teaching. I got it a while ago, so I cannot recall if we taught international students or did a presentation/lesson plan to pass. Will this difference be relevant to my potential employment?

Mushakil-

Thanks for the suggestion on going to another country then working my way in, but its UAE or bust. My husband will be coming with me and his company has an office there and they are more than happy to hire him, provided that he has a visa. His level is not one that is eligible for sponsorship.

Unless Global has changed, there is no supervised teaching practice with real students. This component is considered key to a generally-accepted cert. The CELTA and equivalent courses include at least 6 hours of assessed teaching practice.

Experience using technology in your current classroom is a plus. But getting a grad cert in instructional/educational tech is up to you. I suggested it because it could certainly make you more appealing, a standout to employers. And since you lack a relevant MA, the grad-level coursework can also add that crucial education/teaching element to your academic credentials. Moreover, check out this article, "U.A.E. Moves Toward Paperless Classrooms" (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/29/world/middleeast/29iht-educlede29.html?_r=0). You'll find plenty of other similar articles and info on the subject on the Internet and on some of the universities' websites. (Many job applicants overlook the wealth of info available on an employer's website.)

Computer-assisted Language Learning (CALL).
Not surprisingly, many grad-level educational tech certificate programs can be completed entirely online as a platform for real-world teaching and learning. As for online vs on-campus schools, I suggest you stick with accredited unis that offer both on-campus and distance learning programs. State unis fit this bill and usually offer some of the best tuition rates; you'll need to comparison shop, so to speak. You'll find some grad cert programs can be completed with just four or five courses. Perhaps the university you're presently affiliated with has such a program.

Copy and paste the following into your search engine for links to grad cert programs: e-learning instructional educational technology graduate certificate
