Does anyone know of DELTA prgrams being offered in Japan, or another part of Asia? How well is the CELTA and DELTA recognized in Asia generally? |

I can't really comment on how well-recognised a DELTA is in Asia as a whole (I assume it's a country-by-country thing) but I've never met a teacher with one in Japan. That's not to say there are no DELTA-qualified teachers here, though.
I've never seen a job advertised here that stipulates a DELTA, although the British Council in Tokyo would look very favourably on holders of that qualification (the British Council co-writes the specifications alongside Cambridge ESOL).
To the best of my knowledge, there is only one school in Japan offering even the CELTA - Language Solutions in Kobe - so you may want to contact them and ask if they will take you through a DELTA program. It's possible to do the Trinity Diploma in TESOL out here - I understand that the mentor/trainer doesn't actually live in Japan, but rather covers the whole East Asia region and flies out for the teaching practice observations from the UK.
In short, if you want to work in Japan specifically, a DELTA/DipTESOL is not required unless you intend to work at the British Council, in my opinion. Universities would require a master's degree. |

I can't comment on the rest of Asia.
I assume you're also interested in the Trinity Certificate / Diploma. They are recognised as equivalent to CELTA and DELTA.
In Japan, the CELTA & Trinity Certificate are sometimes recognised, but I've never heard of them being a job requirement. It's more of a "looks good on your CV" thing.
The only exception I'm aware of is a mid-sized chain of schools called Shane. They were bought a couple of years ago by a Japanese company, so what I'm telling you may be out of date, but when I worked at Shane:
- A CELTA / Trinity Certificate was a requirement for staff hired from the UK.
- They offered Trinity Certificate & Trinity Diploma training. It was mainly targeted at their own staff, but they did sometimes offer the Certificate training externally.
- A Trinity Diploma was considered highly desirable for staff who wanted to be promoted to Director of Studies.
On the other hand, an MA in English teaching does open a lot of doors. Anyone who's serious about an English teaching career in Japan should aim to get an MA one day. You can do it by distance learning, so it needn't interfere with your day job.
One more thing: I forget the details, but I do recall that it's possible to study modules by distance learning that are recognised both for a DELTA / Trinity Diploma and for an MA. |

DELTA sounds extremely rigorous. Even more difficult than master's in TESOL. I'm surprised that universities don't require at least a DELTA when they hire new TEFL teachers. But many local professors in Taiwan, Korea and Japan don't know about Trinity or Cambridge ESOL. It doesn't mean anything to them and so to go to an interview and tell them that you hold a CELTA or DELTA would just result in them giving you blank stares.
OP, there has been some really interesting discussion on the DELTA as recently as last fall over on the General forum here at Dave's, with some teachers talking about their DELTA module assignments and providing sample questions, etc. It would give you an idea of what to expect. You might have better luck getting answers to any questions you have from teachers and trainers over on that side of the forum. |

Yes, you can do DELTA modules online. However, the teaching practice (part 2) assessed lessons must be done with an assessor present.
With regards to universities accepting DELTA modules, this really depends on the university - some will accept a DELTA as equivalent to about two courses (DELTA is validated at level 7 of the English QCF, and represents 60 credits of study ). Depending on the institution, this is about 30% of the credits you need for the MA/MEd/MSc award. |

Thank you very much for your help!
Actually, I am planning to do an MA TESOL with the University of Nottingham for the next three years while teaching in Japan. Afterwards, I might ask the school in Kobe about the possibility of doing a DELTA. I have heard about DELTA credits counting towards an MA TESOL, but any thoughts about attempting the opposite, (using MA credits toward the DELTA)?
My goal of attaining credentials is towards teaching in the Middle East.
Thanks again! |

You could ask Cambridge ESOL nicely, but I doubt they'd agree. I've never heard of them being so accommodating.
