I am planning a move to HK mid year and would like to know where some of the more popular areas for teachers might be to look for places to live, keeping in mind offices are central HK.
Monthly salary I am looking at is approx 27-35000 HKD, but I will be with my partner who will be on the same.
I have heard that new territories and Discovery bay area are popular, but to be honest my priorities would be being closish to central HK as I have family living there and would like to be able to visit them easily, and not necessarily to have a terrace but some kind of open living space with fresh air and light. I would also not plan on living with anyone other than my partner.
Many thanks!

Property agency ... you might want to check out the going rents for the districts you're looking at.
Others might know better, but I think any decent apartments for rent in urban areas would take up at least half of your expected salary already. But getting around in HK is easy, and it would take you more than an hour to get to Central from most places in HK. So you could consider places further out.
Hope that helps. |

There's still a lot of ifs and buts. It's easy to get to Central by mtr from nearly anywhere. If you're going to get a combined salary of nearly $70K, what's your budget? $10K a month might get you a 300sq.ft studio flat in Wanchai - but I haven't checked prices for a while. $20K probably something not too bad in the same area.
Check out Wanchai, Causeway Bay. Kennedy town bit cheaper and chance of outdoor space. Kowloon - TST, Jordan might be interesting too.
Have a look at these two sites:-

Nice timing! 2 different opinions almost at the same moment. I hope prices are cheaper than you say, but I haven't checked for over a year. I'm happy in Jordan paying $10500 for my midget flat. |

Island Resort, Chai Wan.
That's where all the cool people live. |

Where will you be working?
Even in the unlikely event that Joshua is serious about Island Resort, you would not want to be commuting from there to Yuen Long, or even to Aberdeen.
All the good stuff you might have heard about public transport here is true, but what a lot of newbies don't realise is that HKSAR extends something over 1000km square. A 90 minute one-way commute gets old really quickly! |
