Hi,
I intend to travel across to Vietnam fromGZ in July.
Will I have any trouble changing my little stash of RMB into dong? Confused
Cheers, CW

Hi, yeah I am going in 2 weeks. "perhaps" they will change RMB's in Hanoi. I have been told by many people that yes, they will take it RMB's because their are so many Chinese in Vietnam. But if you have your "red Book" you can change your RMB's to US$, and I think you will get a better exchange in Vietnam on US than RMB's
By the way when are you going?

I've never been to Guangzhou, but if it's anything like Beijing, it'll be easier to do it under the table. Ask around - especially from long-term foreigners, or head down to the larger Bank of China branches. In BJ there are loads of people just hanging around outside - they have USD bank accounts, and you'll go with them and change it in the bank. You get cash from the teller directly, so you know it's good.

Of course, that's Beijing, but in a city the size of Guangzhou it seems unlikely that you can't get it done.

But remember, be careful. Don't follow them anywhere but inside the bank, and if they don't seem trustworthy find someone else. And of course, remember that this is (like many things in China) technically illegal.
