I know this question has been asked a million times and I did search for it but I'm still not clear.
I'm on a Foreign Expert Work Permit Z Visa (though not sure if the latter precludes the former) in Guangzhou and work at a public college. At the end of my current contract I'll have worked here for two years. My contract is Feb. to Feb. instead of the usual Aug. to Aug. and in Feb. 2014 I plan to find work in a similar institution in Kunming. I've heard that if I've been here two years it should be relatively painless (ha) with no visa run required, but is that so?
Assuming I get a proper contract of course.
I'm a U.S. citizen by the way.
Thanks! |

I hope so. I also have a World Citizen card. That should make vila runs irrelevant but it doesn't. |

If you get a new resident permit by the time the old one expires you won't need a new visa. |

Yeah. It's also worth mentioning that not all schools/provinces are able to convert RP's or Visas. When coming to Anhui from Hunan for example, they required all the new teachers to go back to their home countries and apply for new visas. If the new school has the ability to do it though, you'll have no problems. Just ask them and they'll be able to tell you if it's an issue or not. |

I'm planning to enroll in Grad. school soon as well. If I just went ahead and switched to a student visa I know I'd have to do a visa run, but would I have to return to my home country?
I have permanent residency in Japan, by the way, and got my original work permit there. I wonder if that's still acceptable. I'd rather go there as my children live there. |

It also depends on the school. When I briefly studied in China I did the same thing you're talking about. The school was able to change my Working Z visa to a Student X visa. Unfortunately when I did it, the person helping me misinformed me about the process which lead me to having to get a Tourist L visa for a month due to his screwup, the school was then able to change my L visa to a student visa all without leaving the country. It was a pain in the butt for me, but they can change Z-visas to X-visas.
If you are unsure of the process of if they'll change it for you, you can shoot your potential school a e-mail or go to their office and ask. |
