Hello fellow Expats,
I'm currently living and working in China in the hotel industry. Looking to make a little extra money by teaching English on the side, I've decided to take a TEFL course to learn the basic fundamentals of teaching. I've seen a couple programs that are mentioned in the subject box and have researched their websites, but I'd like to hear from people in Thailand or others who may have taken any one of these programs. I'll post the respective websites for your convenience and leave me some feedback from your opinions and thoughts.

Also, does anyone recommend any particular grammar books or other reading material that I should review prior to taking a course?
Cheers,
Aaron in China |

They are both TEFL courses.
Globally, in terms of quality assurance and global acceptance you might want to consider the CELTA, Trinity cert TESOL and SIT cert TESOL (branded) courses.
EVERYTHING else gets compared to those 3.
That is not to say there is anything wrong with the other course you have asked about.
Price-wise, there isn't much difference in the top 3. You'd be paying US$1700-2100 accommodation included).

Yes, I appreciate the feedback. Just as I thought they are both pretty reputable along with the other Celta and Trinity. I have also seen on other sites that some of the coursebooks used for the training programs are same. For those who are looking for grammar and coursebooks used in the course, they may include:
How to Teach English - Harmer, 1998
Basic English Grammar - Azar, 1996
Fundamentals of English Grammar w/ Answer Key - Azar, 2001
Learning Teaching: A Guidebook for English Language Teachers - Scrivener, 2011
Understanding & Using English Grammar - Azar, 2000
Grammar for English Language Teachers - Parrot, 2004
Longman English Grammar Practice for Intermediate Students - Alexander, 1998
English Grammar in Use - Murphy, 2003
Practical English Usage - Swan, 2005
You can find them on various websites here in Asia and they will come in the form of pdf and mp3 audio files. It is very convenient to put on mobile devices.

I've tried to contact the SIT TESOL office in Bangkok via their contact info on their website, but no response. I see a posting noting a postponement til 2013 (probably lack of enrollment) and the website hasn't been updated since 2009 (located at bottom of page). Anyone out there checked into this course as there isn't anything on Youtube or other review sites online. I think the program offers quite a comprehensive program, but it's a shame with limited info on it. I look forward to hearing from others who might know something.
Cheers,
