What are my chances of getting work there?

I have a college diploma in desktop publishing and numerous high school certificates. I also used to be a teacher's assistant (helping children who had difficulty reading and writing).
I love to travel (I grew up in England, but I have been living in Canada for the past 5 years) and would love to teach english in Taiwan!

I have some friends who just came back from there and they LOVED it! They have put me in contact with an agent who helped them out with everything. He charges $250 canadian a month. Is it worth it?

If I was to do it on my own, where would I start:?: Neutral

Hi Ledie,

Welcome to the wonderful world of TEFL! I myself plan on leaving my corporate gig in the states soon to return to teaching. I had been targeting Vietnam, and it is still a possibility, but, lately, I have been reconsidering Taiwan. I've done copious amounts of research on Taiwan, so hopefully I am equiped to answer your questions...

You've come to the right place...right here on Dave's, of course!

Is a college diploma in Canada the same as a bachelor's degree? If so, you are in fine shape. If not, you'll need an associate's degree with a TEFL/TESOL Certificate.

The agent is probably NOT worth it. Based on what I have read, it seems that most of the people that end up in bad situations in Taiwan use a recruiter to get there. Ideally, it seems that it is best to head over on you own and find a job when you get there. That being said, if your friends have firsthand experience with this agent, and they know and trust him/her, I guess it all depends on how much you trust your friends!

If I were you, I would spend some time reading through the following discussion forums to get a better idea of what you might be getting into with a teaching job in Taiwan:

Taiwan Ho!

Also, I found this website quite helpful with providing a nice overview of life as a teacher in Taiwan (complete with pictures!). Good luck with your decision!

Cheers,
Kirk

there are some really nice areas of taipei, you'll have an excellent year there, so much of this is a crap-shoot, go there first, check things out, honestly, if you can, it'll make a world of difference
