This has still not blown over. Glad I "chose my master carefully", as Scot would say.

Yep. Last week, we experienced missing students (because their drivers didn't show up) as well as some workers and a few teachers; the jawazat were noticeably out in full force here in Jeddah. By the way, for those of you using a private driver for your daily transportation needs, ask to see his iqama, or else you may find yourself stranded and having to pay for taxis.

This will mainly affect the labour workers from Egypt, Yemen, Philippines, India, and Pakistan. And the problem is mainly created by the Saudi themselves, they bring people on a certain work visa, and hire them out to other companies for commission!
Now, the political tension is very high between Yemen and the Magic Kingdom over this issue.

"The new inspections will target 11 sectors, namely banks, holding companies, private schools, real estate offices, public service offices, gold markets, catering, vegetable markets, shops selling household items, Haj and Umrah offices as well as used furniture markets." Arab News 5 April 2013

I wonder how this will impact Chemtech and other mendacious recruiters who send teachers to the Kingdom on business visas? And there are large EFL employers-such as Shabaka in Hofuf-who routinely bring in teachers on business visas and send them to Bahrain every few months.
The enforcement of these decrees will almost certainly vary-depending largely on whether the owner has much wasta.

Like everything else here in the magic kingdom, it will blow over in a few weeks. After the departmental PTB get enough bribes and people with wasta tell them to cool it! Rolling Eyes

Spot checks at road blocks and on public transport are not new. Those without an Iqama are often the target.
