Shanghai Normal University (Shang4hai3 Shi1 Da4), which has been plagued with problems in retaining qualified foreign experts, has now raised its basic teaching load to 18 hours (from 16 hours) . . . with no corresponding change in the pay scale. Is this one more example of Eastern Logic? Or has a tremendous buyer's market developed in Shanghai while I wasn't looking?

Eastern logic? Isn't that an oxymoron?

It is not a policy established by the uni but rather by the Shanghai Foreign Affairs Bureau.

Looking at all the job adds as of late, I have noticed that the salary levels are going south of the 5000/month mark. Heck, more schools are listing the salalry at 3500 these days than back in January.

And always make a counter-offer. If you feel you are qualified and you have experience then don't accept 3500. Counter with 6000 or something. Maybe they'll offer 4000 - - then you say 5500. Maybe, just maybe they'll settle with you for 4500 to 5000. Maybe. By the way, due to my requesting a few word changes, my contract states that I am obliged to work "up to" 18 "periods" per week. Currently I only teach 12 periods due to no fault of my own. I still get paid the same. The only way I get penalized is if I miss a class due to my own volition. If the school changes my schedule for ANY reason, then my salary stays the same. If I work more than 18 periods then I get paid extra.

Go over those contracts with a fine tooth comb folks. Even the most obscure and simple wording can make or break the contract.

Be nice, Rickster. I am working there under the old contract. The new contract they are offering has the offending changes. Am I renewing?
