Hello,
I am about to start my CELTA training and am curious how long it usually takes to get a job teaching ESL in East Asia. My guess is about two months but I figure there are people out there who are much more knowledgeable about this than I.
Thank you for your time and input! |

This is partly country and time relative. Peak hiring seasons for k-12 schools vary by country depending on when their academic terms start.
If you have a degree to go with your CELTA then finding a job in east Asia is usually about as difficult and time consuming as stepping off a curb.
IF you do not have a degree then all bets are off. A degree is the visa requirement in East Asia (with few exceptions) for legal work as a teacher (in spite of what you may read on some recruiter and TEFL course provider websites).

All depends on where you want to go and what you're willing to accept. |

Okay, glad to hear CELTA pulls some weight! I also have an Hon. B.A. in English and Comparative Religion.
I guess I should be more specific - the countries I am thinking about are China, Taiwan, South Korea and to a lesser extent, Japan. I finish CELTA in July but I have a non-ESL job offer that would end August 31st. From the sounds of it it shouldn't take too long to get a position though. |

I can't speak for Taiwan or Japan, but for China I'd start looking for jobs now (depending on where you want to work). Public employers will be starting to advertise around now so put yourself out there. It takes some time to get everything organised eg. invitation letters, visas etc.
The academic calendar starts the first of September.
Private employers recruit all year round. |
