I've been doing some searches on here about distance Masters in Applied Linguistics. It seems that these can be problematic in the UAE and Taiwan. Are there any other countries where this has been a problem? Or will be? |

FWIW, if you apply for a position with the British Council anywhere as a basic teacher, your MA will probably help you get the job but it will not count towards a pay increase unless a) you are a Senior Teacher and/or b) you actually did 15 hours minimum of observed teaching practice as part of your MA. Most distance MAs do not have observed teaching practice (mine didn't).
As I didn't do any teaching practice I don't get the pay rise. As I didn't do the MA for the pay rise, I'm not bothered. Others are though...
You might want to clarify what kinds of MAs you are talking about too. There is a lot of variety among employers even in the same town. The UAE is pretty small but Taiwan must have some who value it and some that don't.
It might also depend on where you get the MA from i.e. the reputation of the school and any links with your employer.
MY advice having done one is that if you have a specific job/employer in mind when you apply for your MA, make sure now by actually contacting them and getting something in writing about it. |

Taiwan need a degree? Not really as 80% of teachers dont even have a work permit, and most schools will be happy with a photo copy of any tefl cert.
However if you are going to gat an MA. Taiwan is not a good place to work, when you could be pulling the big bucks in an international school |

I'm doing the MA through Mcquarie in Sydney.
Will a MA TESOL be more advantageous than an MA AppLing? Others have indicated that the TESOL version ages faster as teaching methodology changes quite rapidly. |

$2000 a month in Indonesia? Are you at a university then? That's comparable to a Korean wage and I certainly expect your living expenses are less. (Well, .......my apartment is included). |
