At the university where I work, we are all insured with PICC.
Recently we had a situation where a foreign teacher need urgent surgical treatment costing about 100,000 RMB.
The hospital will not treat the patient unless the money is paid first.
PICC will not pay up front, they will only reimburse later after a receipt is submitted. This takes time and there is doubt about how much they will reimburse.
The only way the treatment will happen is for people to get together to lend some money.
Anyone else have experience with PICC?
Anyone know an insurance company that will provide better service? |

A lot of schools also only purchase cheap insurance--it covers people up to 20,000RMB or whatever and only for certain things. So that might be another reason why hospitals are cautious, especially regarding people who could leave the country.
PICC might have better options, and you can get medical insurance from abroad (which is quite expensive) but am pretty certain that you still have to claim with receipts, and need to pay the hospital first. |
