The only programs I've really looked into are JET, AEON, and ECC. I'm graduating from Uni next year and I want to teach in Japan for two years or so, but I want to teach somewhere I'll be able to sock away $10,000-15,000 after those two years. Which program would offer me the best chance to save that much money?

JET, but it's very competitive.

For someone without any special qualifications or experience, JET is the cushiest deal available. The others are not programs. They're firms that own chains of commercial schools and recruit overseas.

Either way, if you have frugal habits, $10,000 in two years is feasible.

You might also want to consider Korea. Rumour has it that, although the salary is a little lower, the lower cost of living more than makes up for it.

JET is about to get a lot LESS competitive because the government wants to more than double the number of participants in the next 3 years. Of course the yen will be down to 150 to the US dollar soon enough, maing Japan a far less attractive alternative.

I didn't know that!

I heard that the JET contract was made a little less cushy last year... that might explain it.

Interac has been charging Bored of Eds all over Japan MORE yen, and in turn given them lower quality teachers who go on to nearly starve and also end up with a very negative impression of Japan. Not that JET has ever been wonderful, but every single dispatch company has proven to be far, far worse.

Interac costs around the same to the schools but it is true that they take a big cut from our pay in return for being a middleman.

JET costs are 5,000,000 per year. Interac charges BOE's 5,600,000 per year.

JET salary 3,600,000 per year plus heavily subsidized housing.

Interac salary 3,000,000 year (or slightly less) and no housing subsidy.

Where are you getting 300man salary from? Try 250.

Interac does promise that if one of us bails, they'll have a replacement within a week. Plus they take the responsibility of dealing with the foreigner off the BOE's hands, so to some that's worth the extra fee.

3,000,000 per YEAR = 250,000 per month. In some cases it can be less. Lowest I have ever heard of was 230,000 per month. That poor *beep* sat in the same Bored of Ed as 4 JETs.

The reduced pay during August and December and the basically mandatory car lease brings it to about 2,600,000 yearly without any location allowances. Plus you have the health insurance mess thrown in there.

I'm not defending their pay by any means, just reporting. I know they can afford to pay us more.

I see what you mean, thanks.

EVERY Interac ALT should clearly tell their Bored of Eds the complete picture of what they are being paid. They may not be aware of your pitiful circumstances and think that you have things as good as or better than JET.

I think you'd have more free-time with JET or ECC so you could find private lessons to supplement your income more easily with them, if your aim is to save a fair bit of cash.

By the way teacher4life, you always write "Bored of Ed". Is that a typing mistake or how you feel better describes those organisations? Smile
