I was supposed to have my CELTA interview over Skype this Wednesday, but my university email chose that time to shut down, and everything became complicated... but basically, I did the pre-interview tasks and the interview is rescheduled for next Wednesday. Other than the issue with the email, everything seems like it's going well, and I expect to be accepted into the program.

My question- I will be a young teacher (22, just out of college) and I was curious about what my students should call me. Does it have to be Mr. Smith, or can I have them call me by first name? Is there a cultural preference in Russia/Ukraine about what to call the teacher? I would feel strange being called Mister by anybody, especially if they are as old or older than I am.

No matter where you are teaching, university, private language schools etc., first name will be the norm. However, if you are teaching young learners or teens, then I'd strongly recommend using Mr. and surname. There will be discipline issues aplenty without inviting more through informality.

Best of luck!
