Hi,
Long-time listener, first-time caller.
I know there are a few seasoned voices in this forum that may give me a better idea for my thought...
So to you: I notice that most posted jobs are either immediate openings due to standard circumstances of the business at hand; but also, most contract-terms seem to begin in August.
I would be interested in coming into the public school system of the area and so I wonder if the January/Spring term is a regular point of hiring or not.
Also, can you critique my expectations?
Almost 5 years teaching in Asia, both private and public schools, mostly Korea.
120 hour TESOL in-class certificate.
Strong reference letters.
Bachelors from a US Uni. but arts related, not English.
Recommendations for research/flexibility would be considered.
I do appreciate your thoughts.
Cheers~ |

You don't qualify for any tertiary positions or K-12 positions worth applying for.
The former require a related masters + at least 3 years post grad experience.
The good international k-12 schools require a teaching certification from the country of the curriculum being followed.
The bottom feeders will abuse their employees, no legal documentation, no visa, no benefits, probably not paying in full or on time.
If you do a quick search, you will find there have been others with similar questions. The answers remain the same. |

Adding a CELTA would be appropriate then.
Thank you. I was worried that might be the case.
5 years ago, when I first started researching, such was not the standing tale.
They move the goal posts, I'll move my feet.
Thank you~ |

Just in case you are confused, helen1 wasn't referring to a CELTA. The K-12 jobs that one would want require a state teaching license from home... in other words, an education degree. (since you are American it seems) There is a large re-vamp of the public school system going on in Abu Dhabi, check the TeachAway website for information. You will see that the license is a requirement.
The best K-12 jobs are at International Schools that also require that license. An unrelated BA + CELTA won't be much help for the better schools. Those schools that might hire you will tend toward abusive... lower pay and benefits in a very expensive country. If you contemplate taking a position at one of these, do check them out very carefully... lots of horror stories have shown up over the years.
The goal posts haven't moved in years in the Gulf. This is a wealthy part of the world that has many very high pay jobs for expat teachers. Because of that, credentials and experience are required.

CELTA is a branded TEFL cert and won't qualify you for teaching a subject area in an international school. You'd need a valid teaching license (from your home country or state's education dept.) specific to your BA major + 1 to 2 years of experience gained after license issuance. |

Well that is a chorus of thought.
I will return to the wall-map and consider throwing another dart.
Thank you for your input.
