Hi all,
My girlfriend and I are planning on moving to Taiwan in Fall, and are just now starting to do some serious research about all the details... it's a little overwhelming. We both are TEFL/TESOL certified English teachers in Prague and will have over 2.5 years experience as full time English teachers by this fall. Will this certification and experience help us get higher paying jobs (or get jobs at better schools, etc.?)
We've heard that most of the jobs in Taiwan are teaching children, which neither of us are particularly keen on; we teach adults business English here in Prague. Are there any jobs teaching adults in Taiwan?
And what are some really rough figures regarding income and expenses? We're both moving to Taiwan in order to save some money as we have some debt to pay off... so we're planning on living thriftily and seeking the highest paying jobs we can find.
I'm American and she's Slovenian... I've heard in my research that there shouldn't be any Visa hurdles, we can just show up and get a Visa pretty easily in the first three months, right?
Any other random advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Only nationals from English-speaking countries can get visas to teach English, so your girlfriend is out of luck. The accepted countries are the UK, Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. I've heard that Irish nationalities are accepted, but sometimes even they have difficulties.
The adult market is a tough nut to crack for newbies with no Chinese, but it's not impossible, just difficult. You'd better be at the top of your game, though. |

Really? I've never heard that before... and I know a Dominican national who teaches English there. I guess I'll have to look into this before anything else... |

There are people from non-English speaking countries that teach English. However they are typically married to Taiwanese nationals and do not need work visas.
However if you need visa sponsorship, you need to have bachelor's degree and be from an English speaking country. |

Thanks for the information, JZer and Taiwanease Guy. I've done some research on this for a few hours now, but can't find anything to confirm it, and again, it contradicts some (non-married) friends who have lived there. I've been looking on several sites by the Taiwanese government (http://www.boca.gov.tw) and it never mentions it. Does anyone have an official source for this?
Also, any ideas regarding my other questions? |

Feel free to ask in the Legal Forums here: http://www.taiwanease.com/en/forums/visa-residency-issues-f86.html. They're moderated by a local expat law firm. |
