Hi everyone! I have been reading these forums for the last few weeks and I'm really excited about potentially teaching in Spain. I have a few questions for you, and I'd be really grateful if you could help me out!
I am studying CELTA in the UK over the summer and whilst I'm happy teaching English, I am very interested in teaching business English. I am a part qualified accountant, and worked for 2 years for one of the big 4 accountancy firms. I spoke to the college I'll be studying with and they said that that would be enough to teach Business English, as I have a corporate background and would be familiar with the finance terms they would be using and therefore an additional course wouldn't be necessary. Does anyone have any experience in this matter? I'd feel more secure having taken a course but if that would be irrelevant then I'm happy taking a risk. Also if anyone knows if you require a year or 2 teaching English before moving into business english that would be really helpful. Is there much difference in salary I could expect in Spain teaching the two different subjects?
I am also curious about what to expect initially. Having read this forum quite extensively I understand it is better to be in the location I hope to work, rather than applying online. I also read that it is advisable to get to that location for Sept/Oct. If I was offered a job would that job start almost straight away? I have enough money behind me to live off whilst working and waiting to be paid, but if I got a job in Sept and was told I would start at the end of October, I would probably fly home for a month and save money, so any info on that would also be really helpful for my preparations!
My final question is regarding the best place to live (Obviously this is down to personal opinion!). I am more of a city guy so my main considerations were Barcelona, Madrid or Valencia. I have been to Barcelona several times and loved the place, so was initially leaning towards there. However it seems the majority of others on the forum start out in Madrid, a city I've never visited. Is that down to more work, better pay or lower costs, or just down to preference for that city? Does anyone know the availability of business English jobs in the major cities?
Thanks in advance to anyone who might have any useful info for me! |
