Hi, thinking of hitting Warsaw around July this year for a Tefl job.
Is this a bad time to come, re: hols etc..?
How about average pay - can I make 1000Euros/month easy enough?
I have Celta and am from UK.
thanks |

July is just about the worst time of year to look for work in PL. Everyone is off on holiday until mid/late-September.
4100zl/month (1000 Euros) is definitely possible in Warsaw. However, it may take some time before you build up your teaching schedule enough to earn this much. |

Agreed! 4100 not very good. Of course it is also possible to save this much if you know what you're doing but you certainly won't be doing this starting out in July. 1500 for rent, several hundred for bills, 500 for food (eating cheap stuff at home) no alcohol. Honestly, It's not hard to go through 100 zl a day if you like a coffee here or there, make some copies because you're running late and not near the school, buy a sandwich, some meat to cook at home. You should be looking for at least 6 k or a rich wife. |

ok, thanks for the info.
so July no good it seems?
are all schools closed, how about private Tefl institutes such as Berlitz, Bell etc or local brands?
If I turned up in July would it be a dead cert of finding no work - and if so, where else would be a good place to go?
cheers. |

assuming you're CELTA'd up, 4k a month is the minimum you'd hope to expect when starting work in Warsaw. Other cities may apply different rules.
At 60zł an hour, that's only 17 hours of teaching a week (60 minute classes), which is easily achievable with a mix of business one to ones and classroom teaching.
If you want to earn 4k net, then you'd be teaching approx 20 hours a week. If you're not bone idle / a drinker / a waster / etc this will be hard work at first but ultimately sustainable - it's only 4 hours teaching a day after all.
Given that Warsaw is the best place to find work and that even Warsaw offers only slim pickings in July/August, if you're dead set on coming over I'd have a pocket full of cash to tide you over until the middle of September.
Obviously this depends on your circumstances, but if you have no kids, have no car, have no wife etc then 4000zł in your sky rocket is fine for Warsaw. |

They're not all closed, many in-company classes even go through the summer, of course with less students and frequent cancellations due to holidays and a general lack of wanting to study English, although this isn't always true. There are courses to be had, it's just that they tend to go to the people who are already here and in with the school. You'd have to find a school with more classes than they have available teachers--not likely over the Summer as most people, even if they do take a break for a while, want some work.
As for Berlitz, they start you at 28 zl an hour, 45 if you have your own company, a pittance either way--avoid no matter what.
If you're dead set on coming in July, do so with the aim of finding an apartment and enjoying the beer gardens and local sights, wait till September to bother about work. |

ok, thanks for info.
July doesn't sound so great then - do you think this would be the same around the region, ie: places like Hungary, Slovakia, Czech etc..? |

Understand something though.......
Getting into a new area and scouting a bit is not an altogether bad thing to do IF you have the resources to support the couple of months you are getting acquainted with the area.
You need to be getting your CV together, scans of your passport, birth cert, police report, degrees, all that sort of thing to support your visa and work permit apps in the next month or two. Then get your CV's out there to the schools, towns, countries, whatever, that you are interested in looking into.
Based on responses and, of course, your finances, there are many who move to an area and find work on the ground. Spend some time finding an getting the feel of the towns (not all are created equal), find an apartment, determining the stores and transportation lines are all something that will have to be done sooner or later anyway. Just decide what will fit your goals and objectives.
Develop your strategy, decide your tactics and make your moves.
Best of luck. |

in one of the older threads on this forum, there's a list of Warsaw schools, a pretty good one at that. I'd search around and try to contact some of them.
If I recall correctly, there are hundreds of them in Warsaw...
Good luck. |
