I'm going to be taking a CELTA course very soon and I've mostly got that bit figured out, but my primary concern is where I'm going to go once that's done. I've seen several jobs and educated myself on many countries, but I want to know what the collective thinks. Also, where did you go for your first job?
I've been seeing that Latvia is a place to go. There have also been many people saying Prague is a good city to start in. Are these true?
I will have no other qualifications other than the CELTA. I did a teaching practicum/introductory TEFL course in Italy last summer, though.

For clarification...
You don't have a degree but will have a CELTA.
What's your nationality? |

Rule out east Asia, western Europe and greater North America for employment (Mexico may be an option working at the edges).
In east/SE Asia you need the degree for legal work (visa and/or required permits). There is lots of illegal work but that opens its own can of worms and comes with the associated risks.
In western Europe you have the wrong passport for entry level EFL work.
In greater North America you also need a degree. You might be able to get something going in La Belle Province if you are the entrepreneurial sort. How deep are your pockets?
Eastern Europe, western Asia and South America may be options but the pay is usually poor, visas are usually difficult to get and employment standards are not what you are used to in Canada.

| Mexico is a possibility, but you will work at language institutes and the pay will be subsistence level. I knew people who did it though without a BA (or AA). Also, new visa regs may make it difficult as well; check with the mexico or general LA forum. Other parts of latin america may be doable, but everything will be subsistence level unless you can get a job at IH or something (and even that will not pay too well). Just make sure you have a last ditch get out of country fund for when you need to leave. |

You might want to ask jonniboy about Latvia, or at least look for his posts about working there. I seem to recall him saying that it was possible to get work without a degree because there are so few native speakers about. Latvia is an EU member, so you'd also have to check out the visa process--offhand, I can't recall having heard much of anything about how difficult the process for non-EU citizens is in Latvia. Of course, that gives you two difficulties to overcome, rather than one.
As a North American without a degree, my own choice would be Latin America, probably Mexico. Check out the Mexico forum here--there is plenty of info about working without a degree. (Ditto all the upthread warnings of low wages; but really, without a degree you're not going to be in the running for better paying jobs anywhere.)
Or you could go to Russia, and look Sasha up! |
