I am a veteran teacher (high, middle schools) from UK, Bahamas and US (Miami, FL). Over 30 years in
science/math/computing. Just renewed a 5 year Florida certificate.
I am planning to quit here, shore up whatever pittance I have from SS and pension and move to Cambodia - maybe even on spec, since my US passport will allow me to stay 3 months.
I don't have TEFL qualification but am certainly willing and able to work for it, but my goal would be to obtain a subject area position, maybe with some English language thrown in, which seems to be usually required.
If I have to do this (arrive on spec) what is my best route ? What should I do before I come ? Where are excellent Cambodian teaching for subject area resources ? (not that I have not already checked several). Because it would certainly be better to get a job before coming over, even if it did not pan out.
Yes, I am planning an escape, and I have good reason. But I have lived away from my home (UK) for 35 years and seem unlikely to return.
Advice for this Newbie/Oldie ? Just practical. No judgements, please, because my situation is pretty novel.
I'm just seeking a little assistance.
There is intelligent discourse on this Forum. Hoping for intelligent responses.
Very sincerely,
roybern Idea

Cambodia is not a well developed EFL market so demand is not that high and wages are also not very good.

If you want to teach subject matter rather than coversational EFL then look at boards that specialized in TEACHERS rather than EFL.

http://www.tieonline.com .
http://www.ibo.org (apply to individual schools and NOT to the IBO).
http://www.tes.co.uk/jobs (pick a region on the planet and work from there).
http://www.searchassociates.com/ .

The best way to get jobs as a subject teacher would be to attend a few job fairs (BKK in January is probably the biggest for east and SE Asia).

IF you want to fly in on spec, then get a plane ticket (remember that to get a visa waived entry you need outbound passage booked as well or they won't let you board the plane to Cambodia).

There is enough work to be had to pay the rent and buy groceries but you won't be paying any bills at home.

Welcome to Dave's, roybern!

I just wanted to add to tttompatz's much more helpful post that there is a Cambodia forum here that you might want to take a look at. You would be likely to get much more country-specific information and advice there. The Newbie Forum tends to be better for more general questions than for queries about particular locations.

Again, welcome. Very Happy
