I'm presenting a paper at the Japan Society of English Usage and Style JASEUS conference in Kyoto, June 15th and 16th. My paper is about the resources that ALTs bring to the job, and the support they need from their contracting organizations.

In anticipation of the conference, I have made a survey about ALT positions, attitudes and resources. Are you a current ALT? Please fill out the survey -

Thanks for your help!

Thank you to those of you who responded to the questionnaire. The survey is still open - if you haven't done it yet, please do. I'll leave it up until the end of this week.

The results of research and the survey will be presented at a national level conference. The conference chief told me how eager the Japanese teachers are to get information on this topic. Ultimately, the results may influence the way foreign teachers are utilized and regarded in Japan - an intangible benefit for foreign teachers and the Japanese teachers with whom they work. Possibly, the data will influence department heads and administrators to consider retention and remuneration of ALTs. So, yes, we may all be "paid" for this kind of info gathering.

I am not entirely satisfied with the questions. If anybody has a suggestion about questions related to job satisfaction, teacher skills, I would consider putting them on the survey.

Again, big thanks to those who responded, and even bigger thanks to those who wrote insightful comments.

Please don't! If they actually used me properly, I wouldn't have time to work on my Master's degree.

[Note for research ethicists: you can safely ignore that remark.]

It might make a few people reexamine some complacent assumptions.

Pitarou, what assumptions do you assume Japanese and non-Japanese teachers have? Smile

Am I to assume that you are assuming I have not tested these assumptions?

maybe but unlikely. We've been spinning this wheel in the mud for decades now.a smalls survey won't dent mindset. Though I wish Tokyoliz luck

I'm getting a great response from NETs, ALTs and Japanese educators. The research project is my own, but my BoE got the ball rolling by getting me on the conference program. The JASEUS membership is eager to see what my BoE and I have determined through research and survey.

So far, 37 ALTs/NETs have responded. I'll close the survey on Friday, May 24th.

More, please!

I would call it a "nudge" rather than a "dent", and I don't think everyone is as firmly entrenched in that mindset as you are suggesting.

TokyoLiz will be presenting her findings at a conference with the blessing of her BoE. That's likely to boost her credibility.
