Hi,
I'm going over with Nova in Sept.....and was wondering how long it takes by train to get to some good skiing areas? Does taking the train a few hours out of Tokyo get expensive? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I'm in Niigata-ken, and there are loads of places here. I've read several reviews written by people who take the shinkansen over from Tokyo (see www.snowjapan.com --Gala Yuzawa seems to be a popular resort for day- or weekend-trippers, as there is a train station right inside the lobby). It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, but yes, it will get expensive. Roundtrip from Tokyo to Niigata is close to $200.

Maybe try Nagano?

I live in Gunma which is on the way from Tokyo to Niigata. There is some good skiing up here (bordering Niigata-ken), with a few places around Minakami being accessible by train and then shutle bus. A one way ticket by slow train (3 hours) is about 2,500yen. By bullet train(1 hour 10 min) 5.000yen. The next stop on the bullet train is at Yuzawa; where the Gala and Joetsu resorts are. I would assume by bullet train it`s probably about 6.000yen one way. And as the other poster said, the train station is just outside.
