Hi
I left Japan three years ago where I mostly worked as an ALT. I'm pretty keen to return to Japan in August 2016 and go back to ALT work. I'll have 10 years of experience teaching kids, 6 of those in Japan. Speak Japanese fluently.
Questions; I left Japan with 2 years remaining on an instructor visa. Never overstayed or got in trouble with the law. Probably have some outstanding municipal tax and / or national health premiums. Although I paid off as much as I possibly could before leaving. Could this pose any problems when applying for a new visa?
Next question; Will it be necessary to get hired and visa-d in the UK or can I come back in on a tourist visa with a company waiting to get me a visa in country? (Never done this you see!)
Any advice or opinions would be great.

I don't think it will be a problem getting a visa, but if you move back to where you were before it might be brought up. I'd say you should try and get it paid back once you move to Japan so it doesn't surprise you one day.
You're technically not supposed to look for work with a tourist visa, but some people do. It could end up costing you if it takes a long time, though. I personally wouldn't. |

I left Japan a few years ago, one year into a three-year visa, paid up my city tax but had about 6 months outstanding on my kokumin kenko. I told them I couldn't pay it, they asked if I was coming back, I said maybe (I kept my visa open for that possibility). They said to pay it when I came back.
I came back 3 years later (a year after my previous visa had expired) on a new visa (but same passport), living in a different city, and wasn't asked for it. I have read a posting on the internet though that claimed that, if you came back less than a year after you left, with outstanding payments, you might be chased up for it. I don't know anything about that directly though.

When I first came to Japan (15 years ago), I came over on a tourist visa and interviewed with Nova. Passed the interview and they arranged the visa in-country. I just had to wait a bit for the documents to come through (maybe 3-4 weeks?), then went along to immigration to get the visa.
That was 15 years ago anyway. I don't know if that's changed (probably not). |

I did the exact same thing with Nova a few years ago. It took a couple of weeks for the documents - the whole process was really easy. |
