Hey guys,
I've been teaching English in Korea for 3 years and I'm interested in working at a public school or International school in Taiwan in the future.
I understand I will need a teacher's license to qualify for these jobs, which I don't have ATM.
I do have a BA in psychology and I'm going to grad school this Sept in Hong Kong to get my MA in English Language Teaching. I also plan to get my Post Graduation Diploma in Education (Equivalent to a BEd) in Hong Kong afterwards and get certified as well.
Does anyone know if I have to be certified in my home country (Which is Canada) to qualify to teach in public schools or International schools in Taiwan or can I be certified as a teacher somewhere else (such as Hong Kong in this case)?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks! |

Many public school and international school postings state that you must have a teacher's license from your home country while others just state that the applicant needs a teaching certificate. As a Canadian I'm sure you could be certified in the states or any other English speaking country, but I would be surprised if they would accept certification from Asia. I could be wrong though. If I were you I would contact the Ministry of Education and find out what kinds of certification they will accept. Good luck. |

Hey, thanks for the reply Ferfichkin. Would you happen to know what Taiwan's MOE contact information would be or the best way to contact them?

I just did a Google search for Taiwan Ministry of Education. Here's their website.
http://english.moe.gov.tw/mp.asp?mp=1
I searched 'English Teachers' in the search bar and found this:
http://english.moe.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=11915&ctNode=502&mp=1
It lists the qualifications for employment through the MOE. Point #2 states that foreign teachers working for the MOE must have a "grade school teacher or English teacher certificate from the candidate's home country."
I don't see why they wouldn't accept a Canadian with American certification or vice versa, but that seems to be what it's saying here. Either way, I don't imagine they would accept a teaching certificate from Asia. But, why not give them a call or send them an email? It doesn't hurt to ask. |
