Hi all,
Wanted to ask about possible openings for ALT teaching positions at government schools in Sept / Oct in the Tokyo burbs, or is it only language schools recruiting during this time of the year?
Thanks.

ALTs work on 1 year contracts that coincide with the school year (April to March), so the only jobs found in September and October are the ones where the ALT quit.

I had a September start date a few years ago for my ALT job. The school district had JETs, but then cut em loose and went with Interac.

@move: I didn't know it was possible for contracting organizations to break JET contracts midway through (non-renewals are another matter). Were there factors at play other than expense (e.g. quitting, firing)?

I can't really say, when I took the job I tried to get more details but none of the people I knew had them. As far as I know the JETs did a good job. When we (Interac) came in we had somebody who got fired after a couple of months.

Interestingly enough, that school district later went back to using JETs about a year later, though instead of having one JET at each school as they did before, each JET had several schools.

I'm surprised CLAIR (the body that oversees JET) didn't blacklist the BoE for welching on contracts!

JETs don't work an April to March contract. JETs start around the end of July/early August and end at the same time. If a BOE decides to switch from JET to a dispatch company, a September start time for the incoming ALT would be perfectly normal.

There should be a few openings at that time, but the pickings will be very slim. Any open spots, especially for full time jobs in Tokyo area, would most likely be available because someone quit.

Thanks for the reminder about how the JET year differs from the dispatch AET one, Kita! Move's little anecdote makes perfect sense now. (It's funny the things one sometimes forgets or doesn't think of in certain contexts. Believe it or not I was a JET once, albeit quite a few moons ago!).
