I don't want to re-ignite a debate about recruiters. I just want to list a few recruiters I had a good experience with.

-- They responded to my application immediately.
-- They tracked down positions that met my requirements.
-- They arranged interviews.
-- They answered my questions.
-- They followed up on my situation.
-- They didn't try to get me to accept positions that didn't meet my requirements.
-- They didn't ask me for information I've already given them.
-- They didn't ask me stupid questions.

Thanks MESL

Although I am against recruiters and feel that ESL teachers can and should obtain jobs themselves, it does seem that some people like the idea of utilising recruiters' experience and contacts.

I hope if people follow your advice they'll let us know how it works out for them, including what salary they end up with compared to those who obtain jobs directly at the same schools (if anyone does).

Not sure if getting a recruiter is the route I wanna go (I've heard a lot about the shady ones) but I think I'm going to need a little help.

How do they get paid? Is it a upfront fee or a commission after they hook you up with a job?

Would they be able to help find a university job?

Do they each specialize in a particular region or type of position?

Which of the three would you recommend the most?

Thanks!

1-Usually after you sign the contract...possibly different policies for different schools though. The figure I'd often heard was the school pays them the equivalent of one month of your pay. Whether this actually ends up coming out of your paycheck is debatable.

2-Yes they advertise uni and college jobs.

3-Some do just hire for local gigs, but most of them recruit for jobs all over the country.

4-Use them all. Don't just rely on one. Often they are recruiting for the exact same jobs. Go with whoever is the most helpful and least annoying.

I've used Network ESL twice. It fits the description that MESL gave in the OP.

These are the best 3 of the several I've used over the years. If you need to know what type of assignments they have and where, just ask. Or just tell them what you want. I don't have the inside story on when recruiters get paid and how much, but one of them did tell me she wouldn't get paid til I taught at the school for a month.

Don't just use recruiters. Check Dave's every day. Post your resume on Dave's. Subscribe to the ESL Employment weekly newsletter. And don't just limit yourself to China. Check the international ads. Use Ajarn for jobs in Thailand. Even Craig's List. Etc. Spread a wide net.

Someone inquired about university jobs. Several years ago, the universities in China did their own recruiting. The FAO ran the ads and did the hiring or turned recruiting over to one of the foreign teachers. But in the last few years, most of them have switched to recruiters. Same thing happened with universities in Korea and Saudi Arabia. Don't know what the explanation is.

I used them once too but the second and subsequent times I tried to use them they just didn't bother getting back to me. They don't do follow up. They serve themselves and the people who pay them, i.e the schools.

Last I checked, successful businesses serve people who pay for their services. Smile

They were pretty persistent when I was blowing off package after package they sent me. Some recruiters can get really pissy when you do that to them and they just ditch you.

Anyway, they actually contacted me asking if I wanted to use them a third time. Nice to be remembered. Of course, I'm leaving the country. So, I won't be. I'd recommend them to others though.

Thank you very much for the recommendations, MESL. I've just sent Ivy a query, so fingers crossed. : )
