Saudi Arabia: Religious Police Expel UAE Men from Festival for Being 'Too Handsome'
By Drishya Nair, ibtimes | 16 April 2013
(Source: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/457734/20130416/saudi-arabia-festival-men-expelled-handsome.htm )

RIYADH--An annual culture festival in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh had to be stopped when a group of delegates from the United Arab Emirates were expelled for being too good-looking.

According to an official at the Janadriyah festival, quoted by Emirates 24/7, "three Emiratis were taken out on the grounds [that] they are too handsome and that the [festival] commission members feared female visitors could fall for them. "The festival's management took urgent measures to deport the three to Abu Dhabi."

The UAE's stand at Janadriyah has also been forced to clarify why a religious policeman stormed the stand before being forced out by members of the Saudi national guard.

A statement from the UAE delegation said the religious officer, a member of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, was attracted by the presence of an Emirati female artist at the stand. Though the female artist was not identified, it is said that her presence was not previously arranged and that she had come to the UAE pavilion by "coincidence."

"Her visit to the UAE stand was a coincidence as it was not included in the programme which we had already provided to the festival's management," Saeed Al Kaabi, head of the UAE delegation to the festival, said in a statement according to the report.

I thought beauty was in the eye of the beholder? Are the religious police that ugly?

The religous police in KSA already have a notoriously bad reputation for their absurd rules and regulations; this story only serves to make them appear even more irrational.

I really have to empathise with those 3 young Emirati lads. Cool

As Tim Stanley observes,
"It's really not easy being a handsome devil." ...

I was deported from the United States for being too ugly. And I'm a citizen! Hey, I know I'm not sexy. One time I told my wife I had a sore little pinky. She said "That's okay, I got a headache anyway." Even when I was a kid I was ugly. Are you kidding? When I was born, the doctor slapped my mother. My mother had morning sickness.....AFTER I was born. I was such an ugly kid that when I played in the sandbox, the cat kept covering me up. Fat, too, are you kidding? I was afraid to go to the beach because Green Peace kept trying to save me. Friends would take me to McDonald's and then stand outside to watch the numbers change.

I posted this tongue-in-cheek story solely for amusement purposes---for the absurdity of it. I doubt anyone would take time to research this "news" item in order to confirm its validity. Pure fluff.

Ah, good - I'm glad to learn that Saudi is as tolerant as ever Very Happy

"A member of the Saudi feared religious police, known as Mutawa, stormed the UAE pavilion at National Festival for Heritage and Culture, also known as Al Janadriyah, but was forced out by the Gulf Kingdoms national guards.

The incident took place when the Mutawa member objected to the presence of the Emirati singer Aryam in her countrys pavilion.

A brief U-Tube film showed several guards surround the member of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice before they escorted him out of the pavilion at the annual festival in the Saudi capital Riyadh.
And that's it.

There was, indeed, an incident involving Al Gala (and apparently him alone): according to the head of the mutawaeen, Sheikh Abdullatif Al-Sheikh (Arabic source), Al Gala had made his way into the family section of the event and was dancing inappropriately. Several complaints were made against him and he was taken aside by members of the national guard, questioned and that was it. He was not asked to leave the event, let alone the country. It turns out his uncomfortable dancing and not his uncomfortably good looks were the reason for some cause for concern and discomfort at the festival."

Weird, how that poor land always gets such a bad press. Must be a plot. Smile

Regards,
John

I dont even need to read/ view any of those reports because I know, with an unsettling certainty, that somewhere, somehow a woman must have been to blame for this debacle. Is that not always the case? Cherchez la femme.

Maybe Aryam was really to blame for showing her face there.
On the other hand, the Emirati males did show off
their guns in a very impressive manner...

There's NO such thing as bad publicity Very Happy. Jack the Ripper would probably get his own talk show today.
